A Legacy in Scratched Steel

The heavy glass doors of the flagship Vance & Co. boutique slid open with a whisper, admitting a cold draft and an unlikely visitor. Clara Vance sat quietly in her wheelchair, her frail hands resting on her lap. Around her, the boutique sparkled like a jewelry box. Elegant crystal chandeliers cast a warm, golden glow over velvet-lined display cases filled with watches worth more than most people earned in a decade. Clara looked at the luxury surrounding her, not with awe, but with a deep, quiet nostalgia.

She wheeled herself toward the main counter, where a young clerk named Liam was meticulously arranging timepieces. Liam, wearing a sharp navy blue vest, looked up and smiled warmly, unaffected by Clara’s worn coat and simple wheelchair. Clara returned the smile and carefully placed an old, scratched watch onto the pristine glass display. The strap was faded leather, and the steel casing was covered in tiny dents.

"Could you perhaps look at this?" Clara asked, her voice soft but steady. "It stopped ticking yesterday."

Liam picked up the timepiece with gloved hands. Instead of tossing it aside, he looked closely at the intricate hand-engraved casing. He grabbed a microfiber cloth and began to gently buff the glass. But before he could speak, a sharp click of heels echoed across the marble floor. Sarah, the store manager, marched over. Her tailored black suit was immaculate, her face twisted in a sneer.

"What is this trash?" Sarah demanded, snatching the watch from Liam. "We don't repair garbage here. Get this out of our store."

Liam quickly but gently took the watch back from her, fastening it securely back onto Clara's wrist. "To her, it matters," Liam said quietly, defying his superior. Sarah leaned in, her eyes flashing with rage. "You're going to lose your job over this," she whispered venomously.

Clara didn't flinch. Instead, she reached into her pocket and pulled out a faded, yellowed envelope, revealing an old photograph of a young man working at a humble workbench. Liam looked at the photo, then up at the massive, gold-framed portrait of the company's founder hanging on the wall.

"Is he the founder?"
Liam whispered in shock. Clara looked up, her eyes shining.
"And I am his wife,"
Clara said, leaving them completely stunned.
