An Arrogant Young Soldier Mocked an Old Veteran, Until One Shot Revealed the Truth
The Ghost of the Desert
The midday sun beat down mercilessly on the gravel of the desert firing range, casting a harsh, blinding glare over the targets. Arthur, a rugged sixty-six-year-old veteran with thinning grey hair and a weathered face, walked quietly toward the wooden check-in counter. He wore a faded beige canvas jacket, his boots scuffed from years of hard travel, moving with a slight but deliberate limp. To the casual observer, he was just another retired soldier trying to hold onto the past.
Standing near the counter was Leo, a thirty-four-year-old active-duty soldier dressed in pristine black tactical gear. Leo looked Arthur up and down, a smug, mocking smile spreading across his face. He chuckled softly, turning to his peers before addressing the old man.

"Are you here to compete? Or to beg for alms?" Leo sneered, his voice dripping with condescension.
Arthur didn't reply immediately. He simply reached out to sign the registration clipboard, pulling back his right sleeve in the process. The movement revealed a striking black wolf tattoo etched deep into his forearm. Leo's smile faltered for a fraction of a second, but his arrogance quickly returned, and he folded his arms dismissively.
Without a word, Arthur picked up a standard-issue scoped rifle. He didn't waste time adjusting the windage or checking the dials. He simply raised the heavy weapon, took a single breath, and fired. The deafening crack of the rifle echoed across the canyon. Five hundred yards away, the steel target rang out—a perfect, dead-center bullseye.
"I only need one shot," Arthur said calmly, lowering the weapon.
Leo stood frozen, his face turning pale as he stared at the target. "What? Impossible!" he stammered, his confidence completely shattered. An older range officer stepped forward, staring at Arthur's forearm with wide, reverent eyes. "That is the mark of the ghost unit," the officer whispered. A single tear of shock and shame rolled down Leo's cheek as he realized the legendary figure standing before him.
