Previously: When a smug young soldier mocked a rugged 66-year-old veteran at a dusty firing range, he had no idea who he was dealing with—until a single shot changed everything.

A Desperate Plea

As the crowd began to disperse, talking in hushed, excited whispers about the legendary marksman who had just appeared, Arthur turned to leave. He had no interest in fame or trophies; he had only wanted to see if his hands were still steady. But before he could reach his old pickup truck, a shadow fell over him. It was Leo.

The young soldier's smugness was entirely gone, replaced by a desperate, hollow look. His hands trembled as he reached out, stopping just short of touching Arthur's shoulder. He looked around frantically, ensuring no one else was within earshot before he spoke, his voice cracking with emotion.

"Sir, please... I need your help," Leo whispered, tears welling in his eyes again. "I didn't mean to insult you. I was trying to drive people away from the range. I'm in deep trouble."

Arthur stopped, his military instincts immediately putting him on high alert. He looked at the young man, seeing past the arrogant facade to the terrified boy underneath. "Speak plainly, son. What's going on?" Arthur commanded, his voice carrying the authority of a seasoned commander.

Leo confessed that a ruthless mercenary group had kidnapped his younger brother, a civilian technician. To buy his brother's freedom, the mercenaries demanded the encrypted coordinates of the ghost unit's decommissioned underground archives, which Leo had access to. The exchange was scheduled to take place in less than fifteen minutes behind the jagged canyon ridge just a mile away.

Arthur's chest tightened. The archives contained names and operations that could put dozens of retired operatives in grave danger. He couldn't let those files fall into the wrong hands, and he couldn't let an innocent young man die. "Get your gear," Arthur said grimly. "We're going to the ridge."

They crept up the rocky terrain, the hot desert wind howling around them. Peering over the crest, Arthur's worst fears were confirmed. Three black SUVs were parked in a semi-circle, and six heavily armed mercenaries stood guard. It was a classic ambush setup. They were vastly outnumbered and outgunned.
