An Arrogant Soldier Mocked an Old Veteran, Until One Shot Revealed His Identity
The Desert Confrontation
The Nevada sun beat down mercilessly on the dusty shooting range, baking the gravel and sending heat waves shimmering off the targets. Arthur, a seventy-one-year-old veteran, adjusted his faded canvas coat. The coat was worn, frayed at the collar, and covered in a light layer of desert dust. To the young soldiers practicing their drills, he looked like a relic of a bygone era—someone who had lost his way on the highway.
As Arthur approached the registration counter, a shadow fell over him. Cole, a thirty-one-year-old active-duty soldier with a smug grin and a dark, modern combat vest, stepped into his path. Cole was flanked by two of his buddies, all of them laughing at some private joke.

"Are you here to compete? Or to beg for alms, old man?" Cole asked, his voice dripping with condescension.
Arthur didn't flinch. He slowly reached into his pocket to retrieve his registration card. As he did, the worn sleeve of his coat slid up his forearm, revealing a faded black tattoo of a wolf with three stars etched above it. Cole glanced at it and laughed dismissively, crossing his arms.
Arthur ignored the mockery. He quietly picked up a standard-issue scoped bolt-action rifle from the range rack. The weapon felt natural in his weathered hands. He walked up to the firing line, where a target swayed in the harsh five-hundred-yard crosswind.
"I only need one shot," Arthur said calmly, looking Cole dead in the eye.
With a smooth, practiced motion, Arthur raised the rifle, exhaled slowly, and squeezed the trigger. The deafening crack of the rifle echoed across the canyon. Through his binoculars, Cole watched the center of the distant target completely shatter. He lowered the glasses, his face turning pale, a single tear of disbelief rolling down his cheek as he stared at Arthur's forearm.
"That... that is the mark of the ghost unit," Cole stammered, his voice trembling.
