Previously: When a smug young soldier mocks a 71-year-old veteran at a desert shooting range, he has no idea who he is dealing with—until one perfect shot changes everything.

The Commander's Salute

The silence that followed Arthur's impossible shot was heavy, broken only by the whistling of the desert wind. Cole stood frozen, his eyes darting between the shattered target and the faded black wolf tattoo on Arthur's arm. The arrogant smirk that had defined his face just moments ago was completely gone, replaced by a cold dread.

Before anyone could speak, the roar of an engine disrupted the quiet. A black military SUV tore through the gates of the range, kicking up a massive cloud of dust as it screeched to a halt. The door flung open, and Colonel Marcus Harris, the base commander, stepped out. His chest was decorated with medals, and his expression was stern as he marched directly toward the firing line.

Cole immediately snapped to attention, his hand pressed tightly to his temple in a salute. He believed the commander was here to reprimand the old man for causing a scene. "Colonel, this civilian was disrupting the range," Cole blurted out, trying to regain his footing.

But Colonel Harris didn't even glance at Cole. Instead, he stopped directly in front of Arthur. To the absolute horror of Cole and his friends, the Colonel snapped the crispest, most respectful salute of his career, his eyes shining with emotion.

"Sir, it is an honor to have you on this base," Colonel Harris said, his voice booming across the range. "I had heard rumors you were in town, but I didn't believe it until my men reported the signature wolf emblem."

Cole's jaw dropped. The legendary "Ghost Unit" was a classified black-ops sniper team from the Vietnam era, whispered about in military academies as mythical warriors. Arthur wasn't just a veteran; he was a living legend who had saved entire battalions from behind enemy lines. Cole realized with a sinking heart that he had just insulted a national hero.
