The Unveiling

The biting wind whipped snowflakes around Courtney Sterling as he stood on the snow-dusted gothic steps of St. Jude's Cathedral. It was a freezing winter dusk, the kind that seeped into your bones. Golden pools of light from the gas lamps struggled against the encroaching navy gloom, illuminating the swirling flakes like tiny diamonds. Icy breath plumed from his lips, a stark contrast to the aristocratic sneer etched on his face. He was an elite art dealer, impeccably dressed in a tailored cashmere coat, a charcoal silk scarf, and butter-soft Italian leather gloves. He loomed over me, Lily, a 22-year-old blind sculptor, my sightless milky-blue eyes blinking against the sting of the wind, my porcelain cheeks chapped and red. My oversized, moth-eaten knit sweater did little against the cold, and my canvas apron was still streaked with clay. I knelt guardedly beside the rough terracotta bust I had poured my heart into.

Courtney contemptuously flicked a crumpled fifty-dollar bill down onto the frozen stone beside my shivering knees. His eyes narrowed in mocking derision at the misshapen sculpture. "Fifty dollars is pure charity for amateur mud, girl," he said, his voice dripping with dismissive condescension. I remained silent, my mouth firmly closed, my sightless eyes blinking gently. My chin quivered, and my frostbitten, clay-caked fingers tightened protectively around the bust's rough pedestal. It was more than just clay to me; it was a connection to a past I barely understood but desperately cherished.

Suddenly, Courtney stepped forward aggressively. He snatched the bust by its crown, but his gloved thumb slipped across the icy glaze. With a sickening, resonant ceramic crunch, the heavy clay head struck the stone balustrade, shearing off a chunk of clay. "Don't touch it—you'll shatter the heart!" I cried out, a wave of frantic, breathless panic seizing me. His arrogant smirk instantly froze into an irritated scowl, his sharp jaw clenching tightly as he looked from the damaged sculpture to me, a flicker of something unreadable in his gaze.
