The Professor's Cruelty

The air in the first-class departure lounge was thick with the scent of expensive leather and hushed anticipation. Rain cascaded down the floor-to-ceiling windows, blurring the tarmac lights into a mesmerizing, abstract dance. Polished travertine marble gleamed under the dramatic chiaroscuro lighting, reflecting the plush charcoal velvet chairs. I clutched my framed painting, my heart a frantic drum against my ribs. Professor Brock Henderson, a man whose reputation preceded him like a chilling wind, stood before me, his silver hair slicked back, a predatory sneer etched onto his face. He loomed, a titan in his bespoke navy cashmere coat, the heavy gold signet ring on his finger glinting menacingly.

He snatched the painting from my trembling hands. His thumbs dug into the heavy linen canvas with a sickening sound – a sharp, resonant crack of fabric ripping and wood splintering. My breath hitched. Tears welled, blurring his sneering face. "You're a talentless amateur, Hannah," he declared, his voice dripping with contempt, "and this canvas is worthless garbage." I stood silent, stunned, my chin quivering. My hopes, my dreams, all of it, reduced to shreds in his grip.

With a violent flourish, he flung the torn halves onto the wet marble floor. The remnants of my soul lay scattered. He then ground the welt of his polished leather shoe directly into the wet cerulean impasto. The wet, scraping friction was a sound of pure destruction. "Drop out now," he mocked, arrogance radiating from him, "before you embarrass my academy further." My jaw clenched, my pupils dilating in agony. A single tear escaped, tracing a dark path through the charcoal smudge on my cheek. This was the man who held my future in his hands, and he was crushing it.
