Previously: A destitute painter prodigy faces humiliation from an elite art professor, only to have her life dramatically altered by an unexpected turn of fortune at a VIP airport lounge.

The Reckoning

Armand Dubois, with a flourish of aristocratic cruelty, flung the ripped canvas fragments onto a table already slick with spilled champagne. Tarmac strobe lights flashed, momentarily illuminating his mocking grin as the pieces sank into the bubbly puddle. "Now gather your garbage and crawl back to obscurity before I summon security!" he sneered, his voice dripping with haughty disdain. Hannah's jaw clenched, a silent battle waged against the humiliation. Tendon knots bulged beneath her pale cheeks, her ink-stained fists tightening so fiercely that her fingernails dug into her palms. A single, burning tear traced a path down her jawline, a stark contrast to the cold, calculated cruelty of the man before her. Just as the despair threatened to swallow her whole, the frosted sliding glass entryway chimed and parted with brisk efficiency. Henri Vance, the esteemed chief acquisitions curator of the Musée du Louvre, burst into the VIP lounge, his charcoal double-breasted suit soaked from the storm. Flanking him was Evelyn Thorne, a senior director from Sotheby's, clutching embossed acquisition binders like sacred texts. "Mademoiselle Hannah!" Vance boomed, his voice filled with thunderous urgency. "We intercepted your flight—the Louvre acquisitions board has unanimously authorized an immediate acquisition!" Armand Dubois, caught mid-smirk, froze. His smug expression curdled into a mask of petrified horror. His eyes bulged behind his spectacles, and his throat bobbed in choked disbelief. Evelyn Thorne, swift and decisive, stepped past the staggering Armand. She presented a gold-embossed leather binder and pressed an official, verified ten-million-dollar cashier's check directly into Hannah's trembling hand. "Sotheby's bids ten million dollars upfront for your private collection, full sovereign gallery rights guaranteed!" Thorne stated with crisp, sovereign authority. Armand's tortoiseshell spectacles slipped crookedly down his sweating nose, his eyes locked in paralyzed shock as his knees visibly buckled. High-society lounge patrons, who had been quietly observing, gasped and turned, their hushed whispers filling the air.
