Previously: A ruthless art professor unleashes her fury on a promising young painter's work, only to have her world shatter with the arrival of two unexpected figures who offer a lifeline Arthur never dreamed of.

An Unexpected Intervention

The booming metallic crash of the tavern doors reverberated through the space, momentarily silencing the drumming rain. Cold wind and mist swirled in, carrying the scent of the turbulent harbor. Bursting into the dimly lit room were two figures, Julian Mercer, a distinguished 58-year-old curator from the Louvre, and Genevieve Dupont, a sharp-eyed appraiser from Sotheby's. Both were dripping wet, their urgency palpable as they scanned the room, their eyes quickly locking onto the scene of devastation and the kneeling figure of Arthur Vance. Victoria Sterling’s smug grin froze, her eyes widening in disbelief and dawning horror.

Julian Mercer, his voice booming with breathless urgency, pushed past the stunned Victoria, his gaze fixed on Arthur. “Stop! Where is the painter Arthur Vance?!” Genevieve Dupont followed close behind, her professional demeanor momentarily replaced by a look of concern. They reached Arthur, ignoring the stunned professor completely. Without a word, they dropped to their knees beside her on the wet timber floorboards. Genevieve opened a sleek titanium folder, revealing official-looking documents – acquisition drafts, verified and certified. Julian gently took Arthur’s paint-smudged hand, his touch one of profound reverence, not pity.

"Arthur Vance, the Louvre and Sotheby's offer ten million dollars for your entire private collection!"

Victoria Sterling stood rigid, her face draining of all color, her eyes bulging. The arrogant smirk had vanished, replaced by a mask of ashen horror and public humiliation. Her attempt to crush a young artist had spectacularly backfired, drawing the attention of the very institutions she had sought to impress. Arthur, still kneeling, could only stare, the magnitude of the offer washing over the shock of her ruined painting. Julian’s grip on her hand was firm, reassuring. Genevieve began explaining the terms, her voice calm and professional amidst the chaos.

But Victoria wasn’t finished. As Julian and Genevieve ushered a bewildered Arthur to her feet, Victoria lunged forward, her composure finally shattering. “You can’t accept this! She’s a fraud! I made her!” she shrieked, reaching for Arthur’s arm. Genevieve stepped between them, a firm, protective barrier. “Madame Sterling, your accusations are baseless and unprofessional. Ms. Vance’s talent is recognized globally.” Victoria, red-faced and trembling, turned her fury on the curators. “You don’t understand! She stole from me! That painting… it was inspired by my work!” Julian simply raised an eyebrow, his expression one of polite dismissal.

"Inspiration is one thing, Ms. Sterling. Destruction is another. And public humiliation is a consequence of cruelty."
