The Midnight Departure Lounge

The air in the airport's first-class VIP lounge was heavy with unspoken tension, a stark contrast to the torrential downpour raging outside. Midnight had long passed, and the only illumination came from the amber glow of runway beacons reflecting off the rain-slicked tarmac and glistening puddles. Towering glass walls framed this dramatic scene, their surfaces streaked with rain, distorting the world beyond into a melancholic blur. Inside, the opulence was palpable: nero marquina marble floors gleamed under the subdued lighting, and deep navy velvet armchairs offered an image of luxurious comfort. Yet, comfort was the furthest thing from the minds of the two figures present. The deep acoustic resonance of distant jet engines and the relentless patter of rain created a somber soundtrack to their impending confrontation.

Brock Henderson, a man who embodied autocratic authority at 54, stood with unnerving rigidity. Dressed in a bespoke charcoal cashmere blazer and a black merino wool turtleneck, his silver hair was slicked back, accentuating sharp cheekbones and a mouth perpetually set in a sneer. He was the imposing figure, the established power. Facing him, curled inward on a plush ottoman, was 21-year-old Jack. Her paint-splattered denim jacket, frayed at the cuffs, spoke of a life dedicated to her art, a life that was about to be irrevocably altered. Dark corduroy trousers couldn't hide her slight frame, and damp auburn hair clung to delicate, tear-streaked cheeks. Her fingers, stained with oil paint, trembled almost imperceptibly.

Brock, towering over Jack, raised her masterpiece—a canvas depicting a breathtaking, ethereal twilight cityscape, rendered even more poignant against the backdrop of the rain-lashed windows. His face contorted, not with admiration, but with smug derision. “You are a penniless amateur with zero talent, Jack,” he spat, his voice laced with venom. Jack remained silent, her mouth firmly closed, her eyes widening in a silent scream of paralyzed hurt as tears welled and traced paths through the faint oil smudges on her cheeks.

Without warning, Brock’s fists clenched and violently torqued into the canvas. The primed linen ripped with a sickening, razor-sharp sound, splitting in two. He flung the tattered remains onto the wet-look marble floor. “Watch your pathetic dreams shred into garbage,” he declared with sadistic relish. Jack’s breath hitched, a strangled sob escaping as her chin quivered and tears streamed faster. Brock leaned down, his face mere inches from hers, neck veins protruding. He tapped her slumped shoulder with a manicured finger. “I've officially expelled you from the academy,” he stated with cold finality. “Your career is dead.” Jack’s trembling jaw locked, her wet eyes hardening into a fierce, smoldering glare of silent resolve. The game had changed.
