The Critic's Cruelty

The air in the exclusive Parisian restaurant hung heavy with the scent of expensive perfume and the unspoken tension of high society. Candlelight danced across polished mahogany, reflecting in the crystal glasses that adorned impeccably set tables. It was here, amidst this opulence, that my world imploded. I, Samuel, a 22-year-old painter barely scraping by, stood before my mentor, the renowned art professor Carter Ross. He was every bit the arrogant intellectual, his silver hair slicked back, a sneer permanently etched onto his face. He clutched my latest canvas, a piece I had poured my very soul into, my heart laid bare on the textured linen. His words, when they came, were a physical blow, laced with condescending venom. "You call this worthless amateur garbage art, Samuel?" he sneered, his voice dripping with contempt. I could only stand there, paralyzed, my breath catching in my throat. Tears welled, blurring the cruel lines of his face. My hands trembled, instinctively clutching the paint-splattered apron that was my uniform.

"You call this worthless amateur garbage art, Samuel?"

He didn't wait for a response, a response I was too choked to give. With a brutal, deliberate motion, Carter Ross plunged his thumbs into the heart of my canvas. The sickening sound of tearing fabric and splintering wood ripped through the stunned silence of the dining room. The visceral noise reverberated, causing the delicate crystal wine glasses on nearby tables to visibly shudder. "You will never sell a single stroke in Paris!" he declared, his voice amplified by the shock of his actions. I recoiled as if struck, hot tears streaming down my flushed cheeks, a raw sob escaping my lips. My dreams, my aspirations, my very identity as an artist, lay in tatters at my feet, ripped apart by the man I had once admired.
