A Blizzard on Fifth Avenue

The biting wind howled down Fifth Avenue, carrying a blizzard of white that seemed determined to erase Christmas Eve from the calendar. Snowflakes, fat and heavy, plastered themselves against the glowing windows of a lavish diamond boutique, casting an amber sheen on the slush-covered sidewalk. The air was frigid, the kind of cold that stings and steals your breath, punctuated by the distant, mournful wail of sirens. Amidst this frozen chaos, a small group had formed, their faces grim. Kneeling on the icy concrete was Dr. Courtney Sterling, a titan of the surgical world, her camel cashmere coat a stark contrast to the grim scene. Before her lay a small child, utterly still, his skin tinged with a dangerous blue. Beside him, a mother wept uncontrollably into the snow. Thomas, a young hospital orderly, stood nearby, his own coarse uniform and thin coat no match for the elements. He watched, his posture rigid, his eyes darting, hyper-observant, taking in every detail of the unfolding drama.

Dr. Sterling, her face a mask of focused urgency, pressed a hand to the child's neck. "Back off, orderly!" she commanded, her voice sharp and dismissive, cutting through the wind. "He’s in fatal hypothermic cardiac arrest—call the trauma bay!" Thomas stepped forward, offering a thermal blanket, his gaze fixed on the child's cyanotic face. But it wasn't just the blue tint that held his attention. It was the faint trickle of dark, almost brown blood from a minuscule scrape on the child's finger, stark against the pristine white snow. His breath hitched, a visible cloud in the freezing air. The visual data clicked into place with a certainty that bypassed emotion.
