Previously: An autistic orderly's keen observation saves a child's life when a renowned surgeon makes a critical error. But his heroic act ignites a dangerous feud with the disgraced doctor.

Tommy leaned closer, his trembling finger gently lifting the child's eyelid. Under the harsh penlight, her pupils were pinpoint, her skin burning hot. He touched her neck, noting the severe trismus and the 108-degree fever mottling her skin. "Look at her masseter spasm and mottled cyanosis!" he urged, his voice filled with a desperate, almost frantic, clarity. "It's not a cardiac arrest—administer IV Dantrolene immediately or her organs liquefy in thirty seconds!" Dr. Ross stared, his patrician features shattering. The arrogant scowl dissolved into sheer, petrified horror as the fatal misdiagnosis hit him. The color drained from his face. He frantically tossed the epinephrine aside, his shaking fingers fumbling with the crash cart, ripping open the dantrolene ampule and flushing the IV line. Miraculously, the chaotic red waveform on the telemetry monitor instantly stabilized, transforming into a rhythmic, healthy green sinus pulse. Tommy, his purpose served, silently retreated into the ambient shadows. He retrieved his mop, wiping a solitary tear from his pale cheek with his scrub sleeve. Dr. Ross, humbled and breathless, whispered, "Normal sinus rhythm... My God, an orderly just taught me how to save a life." Tommy offered a small, almost imperceptible nod, his eyes downcast, his shoulders slumping as he methodically pushed his mop across the reflective linoleum, disappearing into the dimly lit corridor.

The Price of Truth

The aftermath of the incident was a storm of its own for Tommy. While the child, Lily, recovered, Dr. Ross's humiliation festered into a burning desire for revenge. He couldn't tolerate being bested, especially not by an 'autistic orderly.' Whispers began circulating through the hospital staff, subtly damaging Tommy's reputation. Ross, using his considerable influence, twisted Tommy's quiet demeanor and occasional stimming behaviors into evidence of his unreliability and instability. He manufactured minor infractions, escalating them into formal complaints. Tommy found himself increasingly isolated, his sanctuary turning into a place of constant anxiety. His supervisors, swayed by Ross's carefully constructed narrative, began to scrutinize his every move. The fear of losing his job, his only source of stability, gnawed at him. He knew Ross was capable of anything to cover his tracks and punish the one who exposed him.
