Previously: A young autistic orderly's acute observation skills clash with a renowned surgeon's arrogance when a child's life hangs in the balance. Can she overcome her challenges to save him?

The Diagnosis

As Dr. Knox’s syringe hovered, Ruth moved. A blur of motion against the stunned silence, she lunged across the slick marble. Her scrub-clad knees slid, but her hands were gentle as she pried open Julian’s left eyelid. Under the glare of the chandeliers, it was unmistakable: dark copper Kayser-Fleischer rings encircling his golden cornea, a sign of profound copper toxicity. Coupled with the severe cyanosis, it painted a picture far removed from anaphylaxis.

“Stop,” Ruth’s voice was a rapid, clinical monotone, sharp and breathless. “Epinephrine will rupture his cerebral arteries—this is an acute Wilsonian copper crisis!”

Dr. Knox recoiled, his nostrils flaring in visceral outrage. His face flushed a deep crimson, not with fear, but with the insolent fury of a man whose authority had been challenged by an orderly. His jaw clenched, a visible testament to his barely contained wrath. He saw only an upstart, a nobody daring to question his expertise in front of the city’s elite.

The Confrontation

With a snarl, Knox swung a violent open-palm strike, aiming to send Ruth sprawling away from the child. But Ruth’s forearm shot up with instantaneous, almost preternatural velocity. It met his wrist with a resounding, fleshy bone-thud that vibrated through the marble floor. Her fingers clamped around his forearm with unyielding, hydraulic strength, wrenching the syringe downward. The sudden, unbalanced force sent the renowned surgeon to his knees in a heap of stunned shock.

“Take your filthy orderly hands off me before I destroy you, you insolent freak!” Knox spat through gritted teeth, venom dripping from every syllable.

Ruth didn’t flinch. Her hazel eyes, unblinking and piercing, bored into Knox, unfazed by his rage. A single tear, born not of sadness but of overwhelming sensory overload, welled along her lower eyelid. Her jaw locked, her grip tightening like iron. The syringe clattered onto the floor, forgotten in the face of this unexpected, fierce resistance.
