Previously: A smug banker thought he could crush a stoic farmer by foreclosing on his land. But the farmer had a secret that would turn the tables and expose the banker's greed in a shocking twist.

A Seed of Doubt

Julian’s smirk widened, mistaking Arthur’s silence for surrender. He leaned back, enjoying the farmer’s supposed humiliation. The neon light outside cast long, distorted shadows across the shop, a fitting backdrop for the banker's predatory glee. He expected tears, pleas, perhaps even a desperate offer. Instead, Arthur’s gaze met his, steady and unnervingly calm. Arthur’s eyes, the color of a winter sky, held a depth that seemed to absorb the garish neon light, reflecting not fear, but a quiet, simmering resolve. A single tear, born of indignation rather than sorrow, welled and then hardened, replaced by a fierce defiance. His breath hitched, a barely perceptible tremor in the otherwise rigid facade.

"You never bothered checking who holds the parent corporation's voting shares, did you?"

Arthur’s voice, a low rasp honed by years of outdoor labor, cut through Julian’s smugness. The banker’s head tilted, a gesture of contemptuous amusement, but his eyes narrowed. The question hung in the air, heavy and unexpected. It was a curveball from a pitcher who was supposed to be throwing nothing but fastballs. Julian’s tightly shut lips betrayed a flicker of unease. He had relied on the standard script: identify the vulnerable target, apply pressure, seize the asset. Arthur Vance, the stoic farmer on the brink of ruin, didn't fit the profile. The farmer’s quiet confidence was unsettling, a subtle shift in the power dynamic that Julian couldn’t yet quantify but felt deep in his gut. He had underestimated the man, and now, a seed of doubt had been sown.
