The afternoon sun beat down on the manicured lawns of the Sterling estate, casting long, elegant shadows across the sweeping stone staircase. Robert adjusted his navy blazer, looking down at his ten-year-old daughter, Chloe, who sat quietly in a wicker patio chair. Her eyes were shielded by oversized dark sunglasses, a permanent fixture since the accident two years ago. Beside them stood Eleanor, draped in a stunning emerald silk dress, her expression poised and serene.

Suddenly, the heavy silence was shattered by the sound of hurried footsteps. Toby, a local boy from the neighboring farm, was running up the driveway. He was barefoot, his dusty denim overalls contrasting sharply with the luxury surrounding him.

The Interruption

Eleanor gasped, stepping back onto the stone steps. "Toby! What is the meaning of this? You don't belong here."

Toby didn't look at Eleanor; his eyes were locked on Robert. Pointing a trembling finger at the elegant woman, he declared, "She lied to you."

The air turned icy. Robert frowned, stepping between the boy and his family. "Toby, what are you talking about?"

Toby reached into a tattered burlap sack hanging over his shoulder and pulled out a small, amber glass medicine bottle. "Your daughter is not blind," the boy stated, his voice ringing with absolute certainty.

Robert froze. He stepped forward, his heart pounding against his ribs, and snatched the bottle from Toby’s grip. He inspected the faded label, recognizing the prescription Eleanor gave Chloe every morning.

From the patio chair, Chloe slowly lowered her head. She spoke in a quiet, trembling voice that cut through the afternoon air.

"It tastes bitter every morning, Daddy. It makes my eyes feel so heavy."

Eleanor’s face drained of color, her emerald dress suddenly looking like a shroud.
