Previously: A billionaire's life is saved by a barefoot boy who spots a sabotaged brace. But the child's next words expose a betrayal that turns the palace into a trap for the man in white.

The guards held Dr. Mercer in a back room while I knelt before Lucas, my hands trembling as I opened the locket.

Inside was a faded photograph—a young woman with auburn hair and a smile that had once been my entire world. It was Clara, younger, happier, with a baby in her arms. The baby was wrapped in a blanket I recognized, one my mother had knitted for our first child, a child Clara had told me she lost in a miscarriage.

"Your mother," I said, my voice cracking. "Is she… is she still alive?"

Lucas nodded slowly. "She's sick, mister. She's in a hospital in the south of France. She sent me to Paris to find you. She said you were the only one who could help."

I felt tears prick my eyes—tears I hadn't shed in years. "Why didn't she come to me herself?"

"She said the men in black cars were watching her," Lucas said. "She said if she came to you, they would hurt you. So she sent me. She said a little boy could slip through cracks that a grown woman couldn't."

My jaw clenched. The men in black cars. Mercer's words echoed in my mind: "the men in the black cars outside will take everything." This wasn't just a betrayal by my doctor. It was a conspiracy, a network of people who had been manipulating my life for two decades.

I pulled Lucas into my arms, holding him tight. "Your mother was wrong," I said. "No one will hurt me. And no one will hurt her. I promise you that."

I turned to my head of security, a man I trusted with my life. "Get the car ready. We're going to the south of France. And bring Dr. Mercer with us—he's going to tell us exactly who sent him, or he'll spend the rest of his life in a prison cell so deep he'll forget the sun."

As we drove through the night, Lucas fell asleep in my arms, his small hand clutching my shirt. I looked at his face, at the familiar curve of his jaw, and I knew without a doubt that he was my son.

When we reached the hospital, Clara was in a private room, pale and thin, but alive. She looked up as I entered, and her eyes filled with tears.

"Victor," she whispered. "You found him."

"I found both of you," I said, kneeling beside her bed. "And I'm not letting either of you go again."

She told me everything—the kidnapping, the threats, the years of hiding. Dr. Mercer had been part of a syndicate that wanted my company, my influence, my connections. They had used her disappearance to keep me off balance, and when they couldn't break me, they had tried to kill me.

But they had made one mistake. They had underestimated a barefoot boy who had nothing to lose and everything to gain.

We returned to Paris the next week, Clara and Lucas by my side. Dr. Mercer's confession led to the arrest of the entire syndicate, and the guardianship papers he had been clutching were revealed as forgeries.

Lucas never walked barefoot again. He wore the finest shoes money could buy, but he kept the locket around his neck, a reminder of the mother who had sacrificed everything to save him.

And as I watched him run through the palace gardens with Clara, laughing in the sunlight, I knew that some things were worth more than all the empires in the world.

In the end, the greatest gift I ever received wasn't a fortune or a legacy—it was a second chance with the family I thought I had lost forever.
