Previously: A dying mob patriarch's brace is sabotaged — but a barefoot boy's innocent warning uncovers a deadly plot and a secret that changes everything. A gripping tale of betrayal and redemption.

The locket in his hand was a key to a door I had locked forever.

I stared at the boy — at the locket, at his eyes, at the way he clutched the chain like it was his only lifeline. My mind raced through the years, searching for a crack, a forgotten night, a secret I had buried so deep that even I had forgotten it existed. But there was nothing. No memory of a child. No memory of a woman who could have been his mother.

“Your mama,” I said, my voice hoarse. “What was her name?”

Nico looked at me with a trust that made my chest ache. “Her name was Maria. She had long black hair and a smile that made everyone happy. She said you were a great man, but that you had a lot of enemies. She said I had to be brave to find you.”

Maria. The name hit me like a bullet. Maria was the woman I had loved before I married my wife. We had been young, reckless, and in love. But my family had forbidden the match — she was a servant, a nobody. I had ended things abruptly, and she had disappeared from my life without a trace. I had assumed she had moved on, found someone else, lived a normal life. But now, looking at this child, I knew the truth.

I had a son. A son I had never known about. A son who had been living in the shadows, waiting for the right moment to find me.

“Dr. Mercer knew,” I said, my voice turning deadly. “That’s why he wanted me dead. He was working with someone who wanted to make sure you never found me.”

Nico shook his head. “He didn’t know about the locket. He just knew I was looking for you. He told the men in the black cars that I was a problem, that you would never believe me.”

I felt a cold rage building in my gut. The conspiracy was bigger than one doctor. Someone had been watching me, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. And they had used my own past as a weapon.

I grabbed my phone and called my most trusted lieutenant. “Find out everything about Maria,” I ordered. “And find out who was in the black cars. I want names, and I want them now.”

As I hung up, I looked at Nico. He was so small, so fragile. He had risked everything to save a man he had never met. And he didn’t even know the truth about who he was.

“Nico,” I said, kneeling down to his level despite the pain in my knee. “Do you know who I am?”

“You’re the man my mama told me about,” he said. “You’re the one who can protect me.”

I pulled him into my arms, holding him tight. “I will protect you, son. I promise you that. But first, I need to find out who was behind this. And I need to make sure they never hurt you again.”

Over the next few hours, the pieces began to fall into place. Dr. Mercer had been bought by a rival cartel, one that had been trying to weaken me for years. They had planned to kill me on the steps, making it look like an accident, and then seize my assets while my empire crumbled. But they hadn’t counted on a barefoot boy with a heart full of courage.

As the sun set over the city, I sat in my study with Nico asleep on the couch. The locket lay on the desk in front of me, its diamond catching the light. I opened it with trembling fingers. Inside was a tiny photo of Maria, young and beautiful, and a lock of baby hair.

And on the back, engraved in tiny letters, were the words: “Our son, Nicolo.”

Tears stung my eyes. I had been so blind. So consumed by my own world that I had missed the greatest gift I had ever been given. And now, the boy who had saved my life was the son I had never known.

But the danger wasn’t over. The cartel was still out there, and they would come for Nico again. I had to protect him, no matter the cost.

I picked up the phone and called my security chief. “Set up a safe house,” I said. “And bring the boy’s mother’s body to a private morgue. I want to know everything about her death.”

But even as I spoke, I knew the real battle was just beginning. The truth about Nico’s existence was a weapon, and my enemies would do anything to use it against me.
