Previously: A destitute child, Lily, approaches a paralyzed billionaire's son and reveals the truth behind his condition. As she touches his brace, a shocking discovery unfolds that changes everything.

The police station was cold, sterile, and buzzing with officers who avoided my gaze. I sat in an interrogation room, my wrists unbound but my heart in chains. The detective—a woman named Reyes—sat across from me, her face unreadable.

"You claim Dr. Vance sabotaged your son's treatment," she said. "But he's provided video evidence of you arguing with Ethan, threatening to withhold his medication. It's damning."

I shook my head. "That video was from a year ago. I was upset because he wasn't improving. I never harmed him."

"The judge will decide that. But right now, you need to stay here while we investigate."

I closed my eyes, thinking of the text from Lily. The secret compartment in my husband's study. I had to get there before Dr. Vance's people did.

Suddenly, the door opened, and a young officer whispered something to Reyes. Her expression shifted. "There's been a development. The hospital called—Ethan's bloodwork shows traces of a nerve agent that wouldn't be present unless someone deliberately introduced it. And it matches a compound used in experimental paralysis treatments."

My heart lurched. "Dr. Vance prescribed that."

Reyes nodded slowly. "We're looking into it. But we need more evidence. The girl—Lily—she's been taken to the clinic. She's trying to get the files."

I stood up. "I need to be there. If he sees her without me, he'll hurt her."

Reyes raised a hand. "We have officers on the way. You stay here."

But I couldn't stay. I grabbed my phone and called the study number—my husband's private line that I'd never disconnected. It rang twice, then a voice I didn't recognize answered. "Mrs. Delacroix? This is Detective Morrison. I found your husband's evidence. It's enough to clear you—but you need to get to the clinic. Dr. Vance is there, and he's holding the girl hostage."

My blood turned to ice. I bolted for the door, pushing past the officer who tried to stop me. "I'm going to get my son and that girl," I shouted. "You can arrest me later."

I drove like a madwoman, the streets blurring past. When I reached the clinic, police cars were already surrounding the building. But the front door was locked, and the windows were dark.

I ran to the back, where an old service entrance stood ajar. I slipped inside, my footsteps echoing on the linoleum. The basement—Lily had said the files were in the basement.

I found the stairs and descended into a dim hallway. At the end, a door was ajar. I pushed it open and saw Lily, tied to a chair, her eyes wide. Dr. Vance stood beside her, a syringe in his hand.

"Eleanor," he said, his voice calm. "You're just in time to see your little friend get what she deserves."

I stepped forward. "Let her go. It's over."

"Is it?" He laughed. "You think a few files will undo years of work? I've been building this empire for a decade. You're a pawn."

But then, a noise—the sound of boots on concrete. Detective Reyes burst in with two officers, guns drawn. "Drop the syringe, Dr. Vance!"

In that moment, everything happened at once. Dr. Vance lunged for Lily, but Ethan, who had been wheeled in by a paramedic, grabbed his arm. The syringe fell, clattering to the floor. Officers tackled Vance, pinning him down.

I ran to Lily, untying her bonds. She was shaking but unharmed. "You came," she whispered.

"I promised you were part of our family," I said, pulling her close.

Later, as we sat in the hospital chapel, Ethan's hand resting on Lily's shoulder, I looked at the two of them. Dr. Vance was in custody, his files exposed, his crimes unraveling. The guardianship papers were voided, and the estate was mine again.

"Mom," Ethan said, "Lily wants to stay with us. For good."

I smiled, tears streaming down my face. "She already is."

And in that moment, I knew that the girl who had been given a slice of bread had returned a miracle. She hadn't just saved Ethan's legs—she had saved us all.

As we walked out of the hospital into the warm sunlight, I realized that the past was behind us, and the future was a blank page. For the first time in years, I felt hope.

But I couldn't shake the feeling that Dr. Vance's network was larger than we thought. His files listed names—other families, other children. This was just the beginning.

I looked at Lily, who was holding Ethan's hand. "Are you ready for what comes next?" I asked.

She nodded, a fierce glint in her eyes. "We're ready."
