Previously: A greedy trustee tries to pass her daughter off as a billionaire's missing heir, but a barefoot girl in the corner knows the truth—and one lullaby chime changes everything.

The Lullaby's End

For three days, the Moretti mansion became a fortress. Guards patrolled the grounds, and Clara never left her mother's sight. But the silence was unbearable. Every creak of the floorboards made Sofia jump. Every shadow made Lorenzo reach for his phone.

On the fourth night, a note appeared under the front door, written in shaky handwriting: "If you want the truth, come to the old mill at midnight. Come alone. Or your daughter's real story dies with me."

Lorenzo wanted to call the police, but Clara tugged at his sleeve. "The lullaby," she said. "The pendant. It plays the same song as the mill's old music box."

Sofia went pale. "Elena used to take me there. We'd wind the box and dance."

They went together, leaving the guards behind. The mill was a skeleton of rust and rot, moonlight streaming through broken windows. In the center, Mrs. Gable stood, holding a music box—the same one from Elena's childhood.

"You came," she sneered. "Good. I want you to see what you really lost."

She wound the box. The lullaby filled the air—the same song Clara had played in the salon. But this time, it was slower, sadder, like a dirge.

"Elena loved this song," Mrs. Gable said. "She sang it to your daughter every night. But she refused to give me the inheritance. So I took her from this world. And I took your daughter from yours."

Sofia's knees buckled. Lorenzo caught her, his eyes blazing. "You killed my sister?"

"Your sister?" Mrs. Gable laughed. "No, dear. Elena was my sister. And she was the true heir to the Moretti fortune. Not you. The adoption papers were forged. You were never a Moretti at all."

The room spun. Sofia gripped Lorenzo's arm. "She's lying."

But Mrs. Gable pulled out a yellowed document, holding it to the moonlight. "Proof. Your mother gave birth to twins—Elena and Sofia. But Elena was the firstborn, the heir. You were the spare. And when your mother died, I made sure you got nothing."

Clara stepped forward, her small face unreadable. "But you're wrong," she said softly. "My mother—Elena—she told me before she died. She said the lullaby was for me. And that one day, a woman would come with a lie that would break us. But the truth was in the pendant."

She held up the pendant, pressing the latch again. This time, a tiny compartment opened that no one had noticed—a folded slip of paper. Lorenzo unfolded it with shaking hands.

It was a letter from Elena, dated six years ago. "To my darling Sofia, if you ever read this: I know you were told I was adopted out. It was a lie. We were twins. But I gave up my claim to the fortune so you could live a normal life. I never knew Mrs. Gable would take it further. Forgive me. And take care of my daughter—your niece. She is a Moretti by blood, and she will carry our name with pride."

Sofia broke down, sobbing. Clara wrapped her arms around her. Lorenzo stood, his voice like steel. "Mrs. Vance-Gable, you are under arrest for kidnapping, forgery, and murder."

The police swarmed in, having followed them despite the note. Mrs. Gable screamed, but it was too late. The handcuffs clicked, and the music box fell to the floor, the lullaby fading into silence.

Later that night, back at the mansion, Sofia knelt beside Clara's bed. "I'm sorry I never knew," she whispered. "But you're home now. And you will always have a mother, a father, and a family."

Clara smiled, her eyes heavy with sleep. "She said the lullaby was a promise. That I'd find my way home."

Sofia hummed the tune, and Clara drifted off, her hand clutching the pendant.

In the end, the truth was not in the files or the forged documents. It was in a lullaby, a birthmark, and a little girl's courage to step out of the shadows. And as the sun rose over the Moretti estate, Clara woke to the sound of her mother's voice—and knew, at last, that she belonged.

Some secrets are buried to protect us. But the ones we carry in our hearts will always lead us home.
