Previously: When a barefoot orphan warned a feared billionaire about a sabotaged brace, she exposed a deadly plot—and a secret that would change both their lives forever.

The Truth That Set Them Free

Dominic moved through the estate like a ghost, his cane tapping a rhythm on the marble floors, his mind a storm of questions. He had sent Lily to the kitchen with the head maid, a woman he trusted with his life, and he had summoned his private security team to scour the grounds for any sign of the “men in the black cars.” But the hours passed, and nothing came.

He sat in his study, the locket in his palm, tracing the initials again and again. E.V. Eleanor Vale. His sister. His first love, if he was honest with himself. The one person who had ever seen him as more than a fortune. And she had died hating him, carrying his child, and he had never known.

A knock at the door pulled him from his thoughts. “Come in,” he said, his voice rough.

The head maid entered, her face pale. “Mr. Vale, the girl—she’s asking for you. She won’t sleep until she sees you.”

Dominic rose, his knee protesting, and followed her to the guest room. Lily was sitting on the edge of the bed, her small legs dangling, her eyes fixed on the window. She turned when he entered, and her face lit up with a smile that made his heart ache.

“Mister,” she said, “will you tell me a story?”

Dominic sat on the bed beside her, careful not to crowd her. “What kind of story?”

“About the lady in the white dress,” she said. “She said you knew her. She said you loved her.”

Dominic swallowed. “I did,” he said. “I loved her very much.”

“Did she love you?” Lily asked, her voice innocent.

“I think she did,” Dominic said, the words heavy. “But I was too foolish to see it.”

Lily nodded, as if she understood. She reached into the pocket of her dress and pulled out a folded piece of paper, worn and creased. “She gave me this,” she said. “She said I should give it to you when the time was right.”

Dominic took the paper, his hands trembling. He unfolded it, and the first words made his breath catch. “My dearest Dominic, if you’re reading this, then I’m gone. But I need you to know the truth.”

He read on, his eyes devouring the words. Eleanor wrote about the gala, about the night they spent together, about the shame and the fear that had driven her away. She wrote about the pregnancy, about the decision to keep the child a secret, to protect her from the world that would judge her. She wrote about the crash, and she wrote about Lily.

“She’s yours, Dominic,” Eleanor’s letter concluded. “She’s the best part of me, and I’m trusting you to keep her safe. I know you’re not the monster the world says you are. I know you can be the father she deserves. Please, don’t let my mistakes be hers.”

Dominic’s eyes burned. He folded the letter, pressed it to his chest, and looked at Lily. She was watching him, her gaze steady, and he saw Eleanor in every line of her face.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered. “I’m so sorry I wasn’t there.”

“It’s okay,” Lily said, reaching out to touch his hand. “The lady said you would come. She said you would love me.”

Dominic pulled her into his arms, holding her tight, and for the first time in twenty years, he let himself cry. He cried for Eleanor, for the years they had lost, for the daughter he had never known. And he cried for the miracle that had brought Lily to him, barefoot and brave, at the exact moment he needed her most.

The next morning, Dominic called his lawyers. He changed his will, naming Lily as his sole heir. He hired a team of private security to guard her around the clock. And he made a promise, to Eleanor and to himself, that he would spend the rest of his life making up for the lost years.

But the threat wasn’t gone. Sebastian’s words echoed in his mind, and Dominic knew he had to act. He had the estate swept for bugs, the gates reinforced, and his security team briefed. He also had a private investigator dig into Sebastian’s associates, and within a week, he had names. The men in the black cars were a syndicate that had been circling his empire for months, waiting for the right moment to strike. They had paid Sebastian to weaken him, to create chaos, and they had planned to use Lily as leverage.

But they hadn’t counted on Dominic’s fury. He went after them with a ruthlessness that surprised even himself. Within a month, the syndicate was dismantled, their ringleaders in jail, their assets frozen. Dominic didn’t gloat. He simply moved on, because he had more important things to focus on.

He took Lily out of the foster home she had been living in, the one Sebastian had placed her in, and brought her to the estate. He bought her new dresses, soft and colorful, and a pair of tiny leather shoes. But she still preferred to go barefoot, and he didn’t push. He let her run through the gardens, her laughter echoing off the old stone walls, and he watched her with a joy he had never known.

One evening, as the sun set over the Savannah skyline, Lily sat on his lap on the veranda, her head against his chest. “Mister,” she said, “can I call you Daddy?”

Dominic’s heart swelled. He stroked her hair, feeling the warmth of her small body, and smiled. “Yes, Lily,” he said. “You can call me Daddy.”

She hugged him tight, and in that moment, all the years of pain and isolation melted away. He had found his daughter, and she had saved him in more ways than she would ever know.

And that night, as he tucked her into bed and kissed her forehead, he whispered the words Eleanor had written in her letter, the words that would guide them both forward. “We are not defined by our past,” he said. “We are defined by the love we choose to carry into the future.”

Lily smiled, her eyes fluttering closed, and Dominic knew that he had finally found his purpose.
