Previously: At the Dubai summit, a barefoot orphan warns Marcus Vance his brace is sabotaged. He crushes the tracker, arrests his guard, and lifts her up—then freezes at the locket on her chest.

The Locket’s Secret

Marcus sat in the back of his armored car, Sophie on his lap, as they raced toward the penthouse. Dana had confirmed it: Lily—his daughter—had been living under his own roof for half a decade, cleaning his rooms, serving his meals, and he had never known.

“Why didn’t she come to me?” he muttered, more to himself than to anyone.

Sophie looked up. “She was scared. She said the bad man would hurt you if she told anyone.”

“Vincent?” Marcus’s voice was hard.

Sophie nodded. “He said he was her uncle. He said he would take care of us if she helped him. But she didn’t want to. So he took me.”

Marcus’s arm tightened around her. “He took you from your mama?”

“He said he’d bring me back if she did what he said. But I ran away. I found you.”

Marcus closed his eyes. The pieces clicked into place. Vincent had been planning this for years—using Lily as leverage, using Sophie as bait, using Marcus’s own brace to make it look like an accident.

The car pulled into the underground garage of Marcus’s tower. He carried Sophie into the elevator, his heart pounding. The doors opened onto his private floor, and there she was.

Lily.

Older, thinner, with shadows under her eyes—but unmistakably his daughter. She stood frozen in the hallway, a cleaning cart beside her, her hand flying to her mouth when she saw Sophie.

“Sophie!” she cried, and ran toward them.

Marcus set Sophie down, and the little girl sprinted into her mother’s arms. Lily hugged her fiercely, sobbing, then looked up at Marcus with fear and hope mingled in her eyes.

“Dad,” she whispered.

Marcus’s throat was too tight to speak. He just opened his arms, and Lily—his lost daughter—stepped into them, Sophie wrapped around her waist.

“I thought you were dead,” he finally managed.

“I was so scared,” Lily whispered. “Vincent said he’d hurt you if I ever contacted you. He said he’d take Sophie away. I had to do what he said.”

“What did he make you do?” Marcus asked gently.

Lily pulled back, wiping her eyes. “He made me plant the transmitter in your brace. He said it was just a tracker, so he could know your schedule. I didn’t know he was going to sabotage it. I swear.”

“I believe you,” Marcus said, and he meant it.

“He wanted everything,” Lily said. “Your company, your money. He thought you wronged his father years ago—something about a merger that ruined him.”

Marcus’s face hardened. “I remember. Roger Hale. He tried to blackmail me, and I exposed him. He went to prison.”

“Vincent never forgave you,” Lily said. “He’s been waiting for his chance.”

Marcus looked at Sophie, then back at Lily. “How did Sophie find me today?”

Lily smiled through her tears. “I told her about you. I showed her your picture. I said if anything ever happened, she should find you. I didn’t think she’d actually do it.”

“She saved my life,” Marcus said, his voice thick with emotion. “And she brought me back to you.”

He knelt down, taking Sophie’s hands. “Sophie, do you know who I am?”

“You’re my grandpa,” she said confidently.

Marcus laughed—a wet, broken sound. “Yes, I am. And I promise you, from this day on, you will never be scared again. You will never walk barefoot again. And you will never be without a family.”

Later that night, after Vincent had been formally arrested and the penthouse swept clean, Marcus sat with Lily and Sophie on the terrace, looking out over the glittering Dubai skyline.

“What happens now?” Lily asked.

Marcus looked at his granddaughter, who was playing with the locket—the same locket he’d given Lily twenty years ago. “Now,” he said, “we start over. And I’m going to make sure Vincent never sees the light of day.”

Sophie looked up. “Grandpa, can we get a dog?”

Marcus’s heart swelled. “We can get whatever you want, little one.”

He pulled them both into a hug, feeling the weight of twenty lost years lift off his shoulders. The locket gleamed in the moonlight, a symbol of a family that had been broken—and was now whole again.

As the city lights twinkled below, Marcus made a silent vow. He would spend the rest of his life making up for the lost time. And he would never let anyone threaten his family again.

Some wounds take a lifetime to heal. But some miracles, he thought, looking at Sophie’s smile, are worth every scar.
