The Barefoot Stranger Who Interrupted My Betrothal and Promised to Make Me Stand
The Uninvited Guest
The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a sea of shimmering gold and deep indigos, filled with the soft chatter of high society. Clara sat quietly in her vintage wheelchair, her indigo blue gown cascading over her motionless legs. Beside her stood Arthur, immaculate in his hunter green tuxedo, his hand resting possessively on her shoulder. To everyone else, they were the perfect couple. But to Clara, the lavish engagement gala felt like a gilded cage. Her legs had been paralyzed for three years following a tragic accident, and Arthur had spent every day since reminding her of how helpless she was without him.
Suddenly, the heavy mahogany doors of the ballroom swung open, silencing the orchestra. A young man walked in, completely out of place among the tuxedo-clad guests. He was barefoot, his sandy hair messy, and his clothes tattered and worn. Yet, he carried himself with an undeniable grace as he marched straight toward the VIP table. The crowd gasped, parting like the Red Sea. Arthur stepped forward, his face twisting in disgust.
"Let me dance with her," the stranger said, his voice ringing clearly through the silent room.
Arthur sneered, stepping protectively in front of Clara.
"Do you even know who she is?"he demanded, his voice laced with venom.
The young man didn't flinch. He looked past Arthur, his bright blue eyes locking onto Clara's.
"I know she wants to dance,"he replied. Another collective gasp echoed through the ballroom. Clara's heart leaped in her chest. How did this stranger know the silent ache in her soul?
Arthur took a threatening step forward.
"Why should I let you near her?"
The stranger knelt down, leveling his gaze with Clara's.
"Because I can make her stand,"he said softly but firmly.
Arthur stood stunned, his face pale.
"What did you say?"he whispered. The stranger extended a rough, calloused hand toward Clara, whispering,
"Dance with me."Tears welled in Clara's eyes as she looked at his hand, her soul screaming a desperate command to her own body: Stand up.
