Previously: When a tattered stranger crashed Clara's high-society engagement party claiming he could make her wheelchair-bound legs walk again, she chose to trust him—unlocking a life-altering secret.

Unlocking the Past

As Clara’s hand met the stranger’s, she felt a cold piece of metal slip into her palm. It was a small, intricate silver key. Her breath hitched. She recognized it instantly—it was the key to her late father’s private safe, a safe that Arthur had claimed was destroyed in the house fire three years ago. Arthur’s eyes darted to Clara's clenched fist, and his protective demeanor crumbled into sheer panic.

"Get this trash out of here!" Arthur screamed at the approaching security guards. "He is trespassing and harassing my fiancée!"

But Clara raised her hand, her voice ringing clear across the silent ballroom. "Stop! Nobody touch him." She looked down at the barefoot man, her heart pounding against her ribs. "Who are you? How do you have this?"

The stranger looked up at her with tears in his eyes. "My name is Leo," he said softly. "I was your father's apprentice mechanic. Three years ago, I was blamed for the car accident that paralyzed you. They said I neglected the brakes. But I didn't. I was framed."

Arthur lunged forward, grabbing Leo by the collar of his tattered shirt. "You're a liar! You're trying to extort us!" he yelled, his voice cracking with desperation. "Clara, don't listen to this madman. He's trying to ruin our special night!"

But Leo didn't fight back. He kept his gaze locked on Clara. "The safe isn't gone, Clara. Arthur has it in his study. The key in your hand opens it. Inside, you'll find the original brake inspection report from the morning of your accident. The one signed by Arthur himself, ordering the mechanics to ignore the fluid leak."

A murmur of horror rippled through the high-society crowd. Clara stared at her fiancé, seeing the guilt written all over his pale, sweating face.
