A Dark Family Secret

As Lily's fingers wrapped around Leo's hand, a warm, tingling sensation shot up her arm and straight down her spine. It was a feeling she hadn't experienced in three long years—not since the tragic car accident that had claimed her mother’s life. She looked down at her legs, her breath hitching in her throat as her toes twitched inside her silk slippers.

Arthur lunged forward, trying to break their grip. "Get your hands off my daughter! Someone call the police!" he roared, his usual composed demeanor completely cracking into raw panic.

Leo didn't budge. He kept his eyes locked on Lily's bewildered face.

"Your father is terrified, Lily, because he knows his time is up," Leo declared, his voice carrying over the murmurs of the crowd. "He has been paying a corrupt doctor to inject you with synthetic nerve-blockers every week under the guise of vitamin therapy. He paralyzed you on purpose."

The ballroom gasped. Lily felt the world spinning around her.

"Dad... is this true?" she whispered, staring at her father.

Arthur’s face drained of all color. He stammered, his eyes darting around the room as the socialites began to whisper in horror.

"He's a lunatic, Lily! A street urchin trying to extort us!" Arthur screamed.

But Leo shook his head, holding Lily's hand tighter.

"My father was the laboratory assistant who made those blockers. He took his own life out of guilt, but he left me the medical files. Your father caused the car accident that killed your mother, Lily. He was driving drunk. To avoid prison and keep you from inheriting your mother's vast estate, he kept you permanently disabled and dependent on him."

The truth crashed over Lily like a tidal wave. She looked at her father's guilty, terrified eyes and realized the monster he truly was.
