Previously: When Lily lost the use of her legs, her stepfather claimed it was a tragic accident. But a simple act of devotion from her childhood friend exposes a truth that changes everything.

The Shadow of Deceit

While Lily wept with joy, David's arrival on the lawn was marked by a strange, tense energy. Though he wore a smile, his eyes were cold and calculating as he stared at the silver basin. When Toby eagerly explained that Lily’s nerves were reacting to targeted stimulation, David's pleasant facade cracked. He insisted that Toby was giving Lily false hope and ordered the young man off the property, threatening to call the police. Toby was forced to leave, but not before whispering a desperate warning to Lily: "Don't take the blue pills tonight. Check your records."

Suspicion, cold and heavy, settled in Lily's chest. That night, when David handed her the daily blue capsule prescribed by her private neurologist, she pretended to swallow it but hid it beneath her tongue. Hours later, when the mansion fell into a deep, suffocating silence, Lily dragged herself out of bed. Whispering a prayer, she used the strength of her arms to crawl across the cold hardwood floors toward her stepfather’s locked home office.

Using a spare key she knew was hidden under the hallway rug, Lily slipped inside. She powered on David's computer, her fingers trembling as she navigated through his private files. What she discovered made her blood run cold. There were monthly bank transfers of fifty thousand dollars to her neurologist, accompanied by a chilling email from David: "Keep her sedated and non-ambulatory. If she recovers, the trust fund transfers back to her paternal family."

Lily gasped, realization washing over her. Her stepfather had been poisoning her, using a chemical inhibitor disguised as medication to keep her paralyzed so he could control her multi-million-dollar inheritance. Suddenly, the office door creaked open. Lily spun around on the floor to find David standing in the doorway, holding a fresh glass of water and another blue pill, a sinister smile on his face.

"You shouldn't have been snooping, Lily," David whispered, locking the door behind him.

David whispered, locking the door behind him.
