The Proposal on the Pavement

The autumn wind swept through the concrete canyons of the financial district, carrying with it the cold scent of impending rain. Olivia stood on the crowded sidewalk, her camel-colored designer blazer tailored to perfection, her square sunglasses shielding her eyes from the glare of the towering glass offices. She looked down at the man sitting on a cardboard sheet against the granite wall. Charles was disheveled, his brown hair matted, his worn canvas jacket covered in grime. But beneath the dirt and the faint scars on his face, Olivia saw the man she had been searching for.

Without warning, Olivia dropped to her knees on the hard, paved ground. The passing crowd of silent onlookers in dark business suits slowed to a crawl, whispering in hushed tones. Olivia reached into her pocket and pulled out a deep blue velvet ring box. She opened it, revealing a heavy gold ring, and looked up at the homeless man with tearful eyes.

"Marry me. Please," she pleaded, her voice trembling.

Charles stared at her, his weathered face tightening in confusion. He looked at the beautiful, wealthy woman kneeling in the dirt before him, then at the sparkling ring. He shook his head slowly, his voice raspy and cracked from years on the streets.

"Why me?" he asked, his eyes searching hers.

Olivia pulled her sunglasses down slightly, tears spilling over her lashes. She whispered, "Because it's you. Please, Charles." She begged him, her hands shaking as she held the box closer to him.

Suddenly, the sharp screech of tires echoed through the street. A heavy black SUV lunged onto the curb, throwing pedestrians into a panic. The doors flew open, and a tall, stern-faced man in a dark suit stepped out, pointing a finger directly at Charles.

"Get him, stop!" the man shouted to the heavy-set guards rushing behind him.

Charles glanced down at the gold ring one more time. His eyes locked onto the intricate family crest engraved inside the lid of the box. His pupils dilated, and his breath hitched in his throat as a spark of recognition flared in his mind.

"This name..." Charles whispered, his voice shaking.

Olivia's face paled with panic as the guards closed in. One of the guards lunged forward, shouting, "Don't let him remember!"
