The fluorescent lights of the bustling Oakridge College cafeteria hummed overhead, casting a sterile glow over the sea of students. Chloe was running on three hours of sleep, her mind completely consumed by her upcoming chemistry final. Clutching a heavy plastic tray loaded with a steaming plate of spaghetti, she tried to navigate the crowded aisle between the heavy grey concrete pillars. But a sudden stumble over a stray backpack sent her off balance. With a gasp, she pitched forward, the tray slipping from her fingers.

Time seemed to slow down. The plate flipped in mid-air, sending a massive splatter of red marinara sauce and tangled pasta directly onto Ray, an elderly, soft-spoken volunteer who was clearing a nearby table. Ray, dressed in his signature green polo shirt, froze in utter shock as the warm sauce drenched his chest. Chloe’s breath caught in her throat, her mouth hanging wide open in horror.

"Oh my gosh, I am so, so sorry!" Chloe gasped, her hands shaking as she reached for napkins.

But before she could step closer, a massive shadow fell over her. Marcus, a towering local biker with a thick grey beard and a sleeveless flannel shirt that showed off his heavily tattooed arms, stepped in. Marcus was a regular visitor who often helped Ray, his father, with heavy lifting around the campus. His face was a mask of pure fury as he stepped between Chloe and the elderly man.

Looming over the young student, Marcus stared down with cold, menacing eyes. The cafeteria chatter died down to a dead silence.

"Hey. You got a problem with Ray?"

His voice was a low, terrifying rumble that vibrated in Chloe's chest. She shrunk back, her heart hammering against her ribs as she stuttered out a desperate reply.

"No. I... I don't. It was an accident, I swear!"
