A Ghost from the Past
Marcus felt as though the ground had vanished beneath his boots. Toby’s father was Leo, Marcus’s childhood best friend and former riding partner. Five years ago, Marcus had been told that Leo perished in a devastating fiery crash on a remote mountain highway. The authorities had handed down a closed casket, claiming the remains were unidentifiable, and Marcus had stood by Leo's widow, Sarah, as they laid the empty casket to rest. Or so he thought.
"Toby," Marcus said, his hands shaking as he held the boy's shoulders. "Where is your mother?"
"She's inside," Toby whimpered, pointing toward the small, rundown house bordering the yard. "She told me not to talk to anyone, but we need money for rent, and she was crying. I thought... I thought someone who loved motorcycles would buy Dad's last toy."
Marcus stood up, his mind spinning. He walked toward the back door of the house, Toby trailing closely behind him. He didn't knock; he pushed the door open, the rusty hinges groaning. Inside, the kitchen was dim, smelling of stale coffee and damp wood. Sitting at the table, buried under a mountain of past-due notices, was Sarah. She looked tired, aged far beyond her years.
When she looked up and saw Marcus standing in her doorway holding the wooden toy, her face drained of all color. She gasped, instinctively reaching for her collar.
"Marcus... what are you doing here?"she whispered, her voice trembling.
"Toby just told me something very interesting, Sarah," Marcus said, his voice dangerously low as he set the wooden motorcycle on the table. "He told me his father made this. And he told me the grave we buried five years ago was empty. Tell me what is going on, right now."
Sarah burst into tears, covering her face. "You don't understand, Marcus. He had to run. They were going to kill him."
