The Secret in the Shadow of the Fence

The words hung in the warm air, chilling Frank to the bone. Five years ago, he had carried Sean's casket. He had stood by Clara, Sean's widow, as they laid his best brother to rest after a horrific, fiery highway wreck. The casket had been closed, the authorities citing the severity of the crash. Frank had mourned him every single day since.

Before Frank could ask another question, the screen door banged open. Clara rushed out onto the lawn, her face instantly losing all color when she saw the wooden toy in Frank's hand.

"Timmy! Go inside right now!"
she ordered, her voice laced with panic. She grabbed the boy and ushered him toward the house, but Frank stood up, his massive frame blocking her path.
"Clara, look at me,"
Frank demanded, his voice cracking with a mix of anger and grief.
"What is Timmy talking about? An empty grave? I buried my brother!"

Clara collapsed against the weathered wooden fence, burying her face in her hands as deep, heavy sobs took over.

"I had to lie, Frank,"
she whispered, looking around frantically as if the trees themselves had ears.
"Sean didn't die in that crash. It was all staged."
She revealed that Sean had witnessed a brutal crime by a dangerous gang. To protect his family, federal agents placed him in witness protection.
"They told me if anyone knew—even you—the gang would find out. I had to let you believe he was gone."
