A Biker Recognizes His Late Best Friend's Toy and Learns the Grave Is Empty
The sun beat down on the dusty gravel of the backyard, casting long, stark shadows past the heavy wooden fence and the row of gleaming custom motorcycles. Vance, a rugged biker with a shaved head and arms covered in intricate black-and-grey tattoos, was adjusting a carburetor when he heard a soft rustle. A small, six-year-old boy wearing a miniature, worn-out leather jacket had wandered into the yard. His name was Bobby. Clutched tightly in his small hands was a beautifully carved wooden toy motorcycle, its details surprisingly intricate.
As Bobby hurried forward, his foot caught on a patch of uneven grass. He tripped and fell, tumbling onto the lawn. Vance dropped his heavy wrench, his tough, imposing exterior instantly melting as he rushed over and knelt beside the boy. "You alright, kiddo?" he asked, his deep voice surprisingly gentle.
Bobby didn't cry from the physical pain of the fall. Instead, tears welled in his eyes from a deeper, heavier sorrow. He held up the wooden toy, presenting it like a precious offering to the giant standing before him.
"Please sir, buy it," Bobby pleaded, his voice trembling. "We need the money really bad."
Vance gently took the toy from the boy's trembling hands. His calloused fingers traced the familiar, meticulous carvings on the wooden wheels and the miniature gas tank. His breath hitched in his throat. He knew this handiwork. He knew every single groove and signature carving style. It was unmistakable.
"Who made this?" Vance asked, his sharp eyes searching the young boy's face.
"My dad," Bobby sobbed, wiping his nose with the sleeve of his oversized jacket.
Vance's heart hammered violently against his ribs. He gripped the toy tighter, his knuckles turning white.
"What's his name, son?" Vance demanded softly, a sudden dread rising in his chest.
The boy looked up, his tear-streaked face filled with a raw, heartbreaking confusion that pierced Vance's soul.
"My mom said you were there when they buried him," Bobby cried out. "But the grave was empty!"
The words hung heavily in the warm afternoon air, freezing Vance in place. The secrets he had guarded for five long years were suddenly unraveling in the hands of an innocent child.
