The Boy in the Denim Vest

The heavy scent of motor oil and hot asphalt hung in the air as the roar of chopper engines finally died down in the dusty yard of the Iron Brotherhood clubhouse. Silas, a rugged biker with sleeve tattoos and a thick beard that usually kept folks at a distance, was wiping down his chrome when he noticed a shadow near the edge of the property. A young boy, no older than eight, was stumbling through the tall grass bordering the chain-link fence. He wore an oversized denim vest that looked like a miniature, worn-out version of a biker's cut. Before Silas could even call out, the boy tripped over a tree root and fell hard onto the dry lawn.

Silas didn't hesitate. He dropped his rag and knelt down beside the boy, his rough hands surprisingly gentle as he helped him sit up. "Easy there, little man," Silas grunted, checking the boy's knees for scrapes. "You lost? This isn't exactly a playground."

The boy didn't answer right away. Instead, he reached into his deep pocket and held up a small, beautifully carved wooden motorcycle. Tears welled up in his bright blue eyes as he looked up at Silas and pleaded,

"Please sir, buy it. I need to help my mom."

Silas took the toy, and his heart skipped a beat. The craftsmanship was unmistakable. The intricate details on the tiny wooden engine, the specific curve of the handlebars—it was a unique style he had seen only once before in his life. Silas felt a cold sweat break out on the back of his neck. "Who made this?" he asked, his voice barely a whisper.

Leo, crying openly now, wiped his nose on his sleeve.

"My dad,"
he sobbed.

Silas stared at the boy, his mind racing. His closest brother in the club, Jesse, had been gone for five long years. He looked at the boy intently, searching his youthful features for a resemblance he had missed. "What's his name, kid?"

The boy's face twisted in pure grief as he cried out,

"My mom said you were there when they buried him. But the grave was empty."
