Previously: When a tough biker gang accuses nurse Rachel of abusing an elderly patient, she stands her ground. But as the truth about the old veteran unfolds, tears start to flow.

A Shocking Medical Revelation

Rachel did not let the intimidating presence of the biker gang shake her professional resolve. She took a deep breath, looked Marcus directly in the eye, and gently but firmly reached for the medical chart attached to the back of Arthur's wheelchair.

'Look at his hand, Marcus,'

Rachel said, her voice softening but retaining its authority.

'I didn't strike him. I was stopping him from pulling out his central line. If he pulls that tube out, he could bleed out in minutes.'

Marcus blinked, his aggressive stance faltering slightly as he looked down at his father's trembling hands. True enough, a thin plastic tube was taped securely to Arthur's wrist, surrounded by a slight bruising where the elderly man had desperately clawed at it just moments before.

'My father wouldn't lie to me,'

Marcus muttered, though his voice lacked its previous venom. He knelt beside the wheelchair, taking Arthur's hand.

'Dad, did she hurt you? Tell me.'

Arthur looked at his son, but his eyes were vacant, staring through Marcus as if he were a stranger.

'The enemy is in the trenches,'

Arthur whispered, his voice trembling as he pointed a shaky finger at Rachel.

'She's trying to take my radio. I had to fight back.'

Rachel sighed, kneeling down on the other side of the wheelchair.

'Arthur is suffering from late-stage vascular dementia, complicated by severe PTSD from his time in the service,'

Rachel explained gently to Marcus and the gathered bikers.

'He had a sudden panic attack and believed he was back in the war. He tried to claw his own face and pull his IV out. I had to physically hold his hands to protect him. I was holding his cheek to get him to focus on my breathing. I did not hit him.'

The tough bikers looked at one another, the anger in their eyes suddenly melting into profound sadness and embarrassment. Marcus closed his eyes, a heavy wave of guilt washing over his face as he realized how terribly he had misjudged the situation.
