The Gates of St. Jude's

The sky over St. Jude Elite Preparatory Academy was a bruised, slate-gray, the cold autumn rain slicking the cobblestone courtyard. Golden leaves, torn from their branches, swirled in the puddles reflecting the imposing gothic wrought-iron gates. It was a scene of stark contrast: the old-world grandeur of the academy against the raw, unforgiving reality of a 14-year-old boy kneeling in the mud. Leo Walker, his uniform patched and knees stained, clutched his scraped knuckles, his small frame trembling not from the cold, but from the sheer weight of humiliation. Towering over him were Richard Sterling, a billionaire in a charcoal cashmere overcoat, his posture radiating a sneering, patrician disdain, and his son, Julian, a mirror of his father’s smug arrogance in a crisp, crested navy blazer.

Richard Sterling stepped forward, his polished Italian leather Oxford shoe finding Leo’s meager possessions. With a violent grind, he crushed the boy's cherished brass microscope, its delicate lens shattering into a dozen irreparable pieces. Waterlogged pages of Leo’s notebook, filled with diligent observations, lay scattered and ruined. “Beggars and charity cases don’t belong among legacies, boy,” Sterling spat, the venom in his aristocratic voice chilling. Leo remained silent, his chin quivering, tears blurring his vision, his small fists clenched amidst the damp, fallen leaves. He refused to give them the satisfaction of a sob.

“Beggars and charity cases don’t belong among legacies, boy.”

Julian, not to be outdone in cruelty, delivered another blow. He kicked Leo’s battered canvas backpack, sending it tumbling into a muddy gutter. Broken pencils skittered across the wet pavement like discarded bones. “Call your deadbeat runaway dad to scrape your trash out of the street, peasant!” Julian taunted, his voice a high-pitched, mocking echo. Leo’s jaw tightened, his breath catching in his chest. He met Julian’s gaze with a defiant glint in his eyes, a silent promise of resilience despite the tears that threatened to spill.

“Call your deadbeat runaway dad to scrape your trash out of the street, peasant!”

Suddenly, the oppressive quiet was shattered by the roaring V8 engines and the piercing wail of tactical sirens. A motorcade of three heavily armored black Chevrolet Suburbans screeched to a halt, their flashing red-and-blue lights painting the grim scene in chaotic strobes. Armed Secret Service agents spilled out, instantly establishing a cordon around the academy gates. Richard Sterling, his face contorted with furious indignation, turned to the agents, demanding, “Do you know who I am? Who authorized this circus on private academy grounds?!” Julian, his smug grin melting into bewildered dread, could only stare, paralyzed by the sudden, overwhelming show of force.

“Do you know who I am? Who authorized this circus on private academy grounds?!”
