The biting Christmas Eve wind howled, whipping icy sleet horizontally across the slush-slicked sidewalk. Outside the old, snow-caked brick facade of the Haven Animal Rescue, the warm, dazzling glow of the luxury jewelry boutique next door seemed a world away. Amber streetlamps flickered, casting long, distorted shadows across puddles reflecting the harsh yellow lights of idling bulldozers. From within the frosted iron-mesh windows of the rescue, the muffled whines of shivering dogs could be heard, a stark contrast to the guttural roar of diesel engines.

Courtney Sterling, 54, a man whose florid face and sneering lips bespoke a lifetime of entitlement, stood on the curb. His salt-and-pepper hair was slicked back, and his charcoal cashmere overcoat, trimmed with beaver fur, did little to warm his arrogant posture. He waved a gloved hand dismissively towards the shelter’s entrance.

"Tear this rodent-infested eyesore down before midnight, every single brick!"

His voice, laced with sneering hostility, was swallowed by the blizzard. Beside him, Mateo, 35, stood tall and imposing. His dark, intense eyes watched Courtney, his jaw clenching almost imperceptibly. Dressed in a heavy midnight-navy trench coat dusted with fresh snow, he held a crimson folder sealed with wax. As Courtney’s order echoed, Mateo began to stride forward, directly into the blinding glare of the excavator’s headlights, his silence a dangerous calm.

Courtney pivoted aggressively, his breath pluming in the frigid air. Veins throbbed on his temple as he pointed a stiff, gloved finger.

"Back off, nobody in this corrupt city can overturn my demolition decree!"

Mateo’s sculpted lips curved into a cold smirk. He calmly began to untie the crimson silk ribbon of the folder, his breath hitching, the only visible sign of the storm’s fury on him.
