The Tides of Justice

Hannah’s soot-dusted fingers, steady despite the tension, unfurled the thick, 17th-century sheepskin vellum across the workbench. Under the warm amber lantern light, a crimson wax seal glistened. Embossed upon it was the unmistakable anchor and royal crest of King Charles II. Jason Vance leaned closer, his earlier bravado completely gone, replaced by a slack-jawed terror. His pupils dilated, his eyes bulging as he read the sovereign ink signatures.

“Original Royal Land Patent, 1684. This entire harbor tavern and the three hundred yards of deepwater wharf you built your corporate tower on belong perpetually to the Guild of Horologists.”

Hannah’s voice was unwavering, piercingly clear. The words hung in the air, heavy with the weight of centuries. Vance stumbled backward, his expensive Italian leather shoes skidding on the damp floorboards. He crashed violently into a hanging coil of rusted ship chains, the metallic clang deafening. An antique brass barometer toppled, clattering across the floor. His manicured hands trembled uncontrollably as the irreversible legal disaster dawned on him.

“This… this nullifies our entire ten-billion-dollar harbor development.”

His voice was a strangled, breathless quaver, his lips trembling. Hannah Thorne, however, stood impassive, crossing her arms over her linen apron. Majestic stoicism radiated from her, and a cold triumph gleamed in her piercing slate-gray eyes. As Vance stood frozen in humiliated ruin, his chin quivering, Hannah calmly picked up his gold Montblanc pen from the table. With a sharp, decisive crack, she snapped it in half, tossing the pieces at his polished shoes. Outside, the bulldozer engines sputtered and died. “Get off my docks,” she said, her voice a final, razor-sharp decree. Vance could only stand there, hot tears of rage welling, defeated not by force, but by the unyielding march of time and the secrets it kept.
