The Atlantic's Cold Embrace

The biting winter wind shrieked around the gothic spires of St. Jude's Cathedral, whipping fine snow across the icy cobblestones. Dusk had fallen, painting the sky in bruised purples and grays as the Atlantic's frigid breath ghosted over the harbor. Lanterns cast long, dancing shadows against the frost-rimed stone, their warm amber glow a stark contrast to the freezing air. Midway up the grand limestone steps stood Jason Vance, a man who seemed immune to the cold, or perhaps just too arrogant to notice it. His tailored charcoal cashmere overcoat, the mink collar turned up, couldn't hide the smug confidence radiating from him. Raven hair, dusted with white flakes, was slicked back, and a crimson silk scarf added a splash of defiant color. In his gloved hand, he held a sheaf of foreclosure writs – instruments of ruin. His breath plumed, thick and white, a stark reminder of the harsh reality he seemed determined to ignore.

Two steps below, I stood, Jack Callaghan. The sea had etched its story onto my face, and the salt spray had left a permanent stubble on my jaw. My eyes, hardened by years spent in the crushing depths, met Vance’s. My black neoprene dive suit, still slick with Atlantic seawater, dripped onto the snow-covered stones. Clutched in my hands was a battered, seaweed-encrusted Pelican storm case, a testament to my recent, arduous dive. Vance smirked, the picture of condescension. He brandished the papers like a weapon. "Your bankrupt little salvage scow belongs to my marina now, Callaghan," he sneered, his voice laced with mocking aristocratic arrogance. "Crawl back to the gutters." I remained silent, my jaw tight, my gaze unwavering. He stepped down, a cruel curl to his lip, and shoved the folded writ hard against my chest. The impact was dull, solid. "Sign the surrender, you pathetic, broke drowned rat," he hissed, his words venomous. I absorbed the blow without flinching, the frost on my eyelashes glittering. Ice, both literal and metaphorical, hardened in my eyes.
