The Grand Entrance

The air in the Le Grand Palais Hotel lobby was thick with the scent of expensive perfume and a nervous energy that only a high school reunion can generate. Outside, a midnight thunderstorm raged, mirroring the tempest brewing inside me. Rain lashed against the towering glass facade, each lightning strike illuminating the opulent space in stark, dramatic flashes. I arrived precisely on time, stepping out of a humble yellow taxi, the rain dampening my simple charcoal trench coat. I smoothed it down, took a deep breath, and walked through the brass revolving doors.

And there he was. Armand Dubois. My ex. The man who’d spent our youth making me feel small, now a smug billionaire hedge-fund heir, complete with a tailored tuxedo and a glass of amber bourbon. He lounged near the gaudy reunion banner, his sneer a familiar, unwelcome sight. As I shook the raindrops from my coat, the chandelier light caught his face, and his arrogant grin widened.

Armand Dubois: "Look what crawled out of a ten-dollar cab... Still a pathetic nobody, Clara!"

His voice, dripping with disdain, echoed in the marble lobby. I met his gaze, my own slate-gray eyes unblinking. The lightning flashed again, briefly silhouetting his cruel features against the storm-swept glass. He took a step towards me, swirling his drink, his manicured finger jabbing the air inches from my face. He had always enjoyed exerting his power, especially over me.

Armand Dubois: "Security, throw this street trash into the alley before she soils the carpet!"

My jaw tightened, a silent testament to years of self-control. I stood my ground, my breath steady, refusing to give him the satisfaction of seeing me flinch. He lunged, intending to shove me, to assert his dominance one last time. But before his hand could connect, a blur of motion surged from the shadows. A powerful hand clamped down on his wrist, twisting it with brutal efficiency. The sickening crack of shattering crystal filled the air as his bourbon glass plummeted to the Nero Marquina marble floor. Armand crumpled to his knee, his face contorted in agony.

Special Agent Marcus Cole: "Do not touch the Principal!"

Armand’s eyes bulged, his arrogant facade dissolving into a mask of shock and pain. A man I hadn’t seen before, dressed in a sharp tactical suit with an earpiece, had intervened. He stood between Armand and me, a formidable presence.
