Previously: A fashion mogul mocked a blind girl on a luxury flight, not knowing the stranger beside them owned the airline. His quiet words changed everything.

The Secret in His Eyes

Lorenzo led us to a private suite at the back of the cabin, a space I hadn’t even known existed. It was adorned with plush seats, a small table, and a window that framed the deep blue sky. Chloe sat beside me, her hand never leaving mine, her ears tuned to every sound.

“I meant what I said,” Lorenzo began, pouring us each a glass of water. “My daughter, Isabella, was born blind. She passed away three years ago, just before her tenth birthday.”

My heart clenched. “I’m so sorry.”

He nodded, his eyes distant. “She was the light of my life. After she died, I poured everything into this airline, trying to fill the void. But seeing Chloe today…” He paused, his voice thick. “It brought it all back.”

Chloe tilted her head. “Was Isabella brave?”

Lorenzo smiled, a crack in his stoic facade. “The bravest girl I ever knew. She never let her blindness stop her from dreaming. She used to say, ‘Daddy, the sky is my canvas, and I paint with my ears.’”

Chloe giggled, a sound that made my heart swell. “I like that. I paint with my ears too.”

Lorenzo laughed, a warm, genuine sound. “You remind me of her so much.” He turned to me, his expression growing serious. “Mark, I need to tell you something. It’s about your late wife, Emily.”

I stiffened. “What about her?”

He reached into his blazer and pulled out a worn photograph. It showed a younger Emily, laughing, holding a baby girl. My breath caught. “Where did you get that?”

“Emily and I were… together, once,” he said slowly. “Before she met you. She came to me for help when she was pregnant with Chloe, but I was too blinded by my own grief to see what she needed. I turned her away.”

My hands trembled. “You’re Chloe’s father?”

Lorenzo looked at me, his eyes full of pain. “No. I raised a child who wasn’t mine, so I know the weight of that. But I did a DNA test years ago, when Emily first told me. Chloe is not my biological daughter. But that doesn’t matter. She was Emily’s, and Emily was the love of my life.”

I felt a swirl of emotions — anger, confusion, but also a strange relief. “Why are you telling me this now?”

“Because I couldn’t save Isabella,” he said, his voice cracking. “And I couldn’t save Emily. But I can still help you, Mark. I can give Chloe everything her heart desires — surgeries, education, a future without limits. If you’ll let me.”

Chloe tugged at my sleeve. “Daddy, is Mr. Moretti going to be my grandpa?”

I looked at Lorenzo, seeing the desperate hope in his eyes. I didn’t know if I could trust him, but I knew one thing: he had just defended my daughter, and he had loved her mother.

“Let’s talk after we land,” I said, my voice steady. “There’s a lot to unpack.”

Lorenzo nodded, a small smile on his lips. “That’s fair. But there’s one more thing you should know.”

“What?”

He leaned in, lowering his voice. “Serena Waverly isn’t just a fashion mogul. She’s the daughter of a man who tried to ruin me years ago. She came on this flight to provoke me, to create a scandal that would tank my stock. She didn’t know about Chloe. But now she does, and she’ll use it against us if she can.”

My blood ran cold. “What do you mean?”

“She has a tabloid journalist on her payroll,” Lorenzo said. “They’re probably already writing a story about the ‘blind girl who got a billionaire’s pity.’ I need to get ahead of this, before it hurts Chloe.”

I clenched my fists. “What can we do?”

Lorenzo’s eyes hardened. “We fight back. And I have a plan.”
