A Ghost from the Past

The autumn wind swept across the quiet clearing of the rural homestead, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. Rebecca wiped a bead of sweat from her brow, her hands submerged in the cold, soapy water of a heavy metal basin. Her linen dress, stained with water and soap, clung to her frame as she scrubbed. This quiet, exhausting routine was her sanctuary—a shield against the memories of a life she had been forced to leave behind six years ago.

Suddenly, the low, powerful hum of a luxury engine shattered the countryside silence. Rebecca froze, her heart leaping into her throat. A sleek, white luxury crossover navigated the bumpy dirt path, kicking up clouds of dust before coming to a stop just yards away from her washing station.

The door swung open, and a man stepped out. He wore a sharp, perfectly tailored black Italian suit that looked absurdly out of place against the rugged, weathered log cabin. It was Gabriel. His dark eyes scanned the property before locking onto her. Rebecca felt the air leave her lungs.

"It's you," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the rustling leaves.
"I finally found you," Gabriel replied, his voice thick with emotions he had carried for over half a decade. He took a hesitant step forward, his eyes searching her face.

Before Rebecca could find her voice, the screen door of the cabin creaked open. A young boy, no older than five, ran down the dirt path. His cheeks were flushed from play, his curly light brown hair bouncing.

"Mom! Mom! Look what I found!" Tommy yelled, holding up a smooth river stone.

Rebecca instinctively pulled the boy close, wrapping her arms around him as if to shield him from the ghost standing in her yard. Gabriel stopped dead in his tracks. He stared at the boy, then at Rebecca, his face turning pale.

"Mom..." Gabriel whispered, the realization hitting him like a physical blow. He looked into Rebecca's tearful eyes. "Is he my son?"
