Previously: When a snobbish director throws a rag at a mechanic's feet, he has no idea the man he's humiliating owns the entire bank. But Lily knows exactly who her daddy is.

The Envelope That Changed Everything

The vault door sealed shut behind Preston’s retreating back, but the silence that followed was anything but peaceful. Lily clung to my leg, her small fingers digging into the denim of my work pants. Rocco stood at attention, but his eyes flicked toward the exit, where the guards had just dragged Preston into the elevator.

“Founder,” Rocco said, his voice low and grave, “you should know something. Mr. Preston wasn’t just a showroom director. He had access to the bank’s internal records for the last three years. And he’s been using that access to skim a quiet fortune into a private account.”

I felt my jaw tighten. “How much?”

“Fourteen million,” Rocco said. “Maybe more. We only caught the pattern yesterday, but we haven’t been able to trace the final destination. He’s been feeding it to a shell company registered in the Cayman Islands.”

I looked down at Lily, who was staring up at me with wide eyes. I smoothed her curls and said, “Sweetheart, go wait in my office. There’s a TV and some snacks. I need to talk to Commander Rocco alone.”

She nodded, too young to understand the storm brewing inside me, and trotted off toward the private corridor. When she was gone, I turned to Rocco. “Trace everything. I want names, accounts, and every transaction he’s ever made. And I want it before the end of the day.”

“Yes, sir,” Rocco said. “But there’s something else. Preston’s lawyer just arrived in the lobby. He’s demanding to speak with you. Says he has a document that changes everything.”

I frowned. “A document? What kind of document?”

“He wouldn’t say. But he looked nervous. And he’s not alone.”

I walked to the lobby, my boots clicking on the granite floor. The lawyer was a thin man in a charcoal suit, clutching a leather briefcase as if it held a bomb. He stood near the main doors, and behind him, in the reflection of the glass, I saw a woman. Blonde. Sharp features. Wearing a red dress that looked far too expensive for a casual visit.

It was my wife, Vanessa.

I stopped dead. Vanessa never came to the bank. She didn’t even know where it was. But here she was, standing next to Preston’s lawyer, her arms crossed and her eyes gleaming with cold satisfaction.

“Enzo,” she said, her voice sweet enough to rot teeth. “I was hoping to catch you before the board meeting.”

“What are you doing here?” I asked, my voice flat.

The lawyer stepped forward and opened his briefcase. He pulled out a thick envelope and held it out to me. “Mr. De Luca, I represent your wife in a custody matter. She’s filed for sole legal and physical custody of your daughter, citing your dangerous work environment and alleged emotional instability.”

I stared at the envelope as if it were a snake. “You’re joking.”

“I never joke,” Vanessa said, stepping closer. “You think I don’t know about your little secret, Enzo? The bank? The billions? You thought you could keep it from me, but I found out months ago. And I’ve been waiting for the perfect moment to strike.”

“You’re my wife,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper. “We have a child together. Why would you do this?”

She laughed, a brittle sound that echoed in the lobby. “Because you lied to me. You made me believe we were struggling. I had to sell my mother’s jewelry to pay for Lily’s school clothes, while you were sitting on a mountain of gold. You humiliated me, Enzo. And now I’m going to take everything you love.”

I looked at the lawyer, who was shifting uncomfortably. “Is this legal?”

“It’s… pending a court hearing,” he stammered. “But the evidence is substantial. If you don’t agree to a settlement, we’ll take this to trial.”

I felt the world tilt. I had built an empire from nothing, survived boardroom betrayals and financial crises, but this — this was a knife to the heart. And the person holding it was the woman I’d once loved more than anything.

“You want a settlement?” I said, my voice cold. “Fine. I’ll give you a settlement. But you’ll never see Lily again.”

Vanessa’s smile faltered. “You can’t do that.”

“Watch me,” I said. I turned to Rocco. “Get my lawyers on the phone. Now.”

But as Rocco reached for his phone, the elevator doors opened behind us, and Preston stepped out — his silver suit rumpled, his face flushed with triumph. He was holding a phone to his ear, and he was grinning.

“Too late, Founder,” he said, hanging up. “I just sent your wife’s evidence to every news outlet in the city. By tomorrow morning, the whole world will know that Enzo De Luca cheated his own family out of a fortune. And you’ll be lucky if they don’t burn your precious bank to the ground.”

Lily appeared in the corridor behind me, her face pale. “Daddy? What’s going on?”

I pulled her close and whispered, “Nothing, sweetheart. Daddy’s got this.”

But as I looked at Preston and Vanessa standing side by side, I realized they had been working together all along. And I had walked straight into their trap.

The question was: how was I going to get out?
