The Night the Tides Turned

The exclusive art gallery, perched precariously on the cliffs of Cannes, was a monument to opulence. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors offered a dramatic, if terrifying, view of the Mediterranean Sea, which was currently a furious, churning mass of dark water under a sky split by lightning. Inside, the pristine Carrara marble floors reflected the stark museum lighting, the glint of modern sculptures, and the pathetic figure of Jason Vance. He stood near the balcony, a man swimming in privilege, clutching a flute of Dom Pérignon as if it were his last lifeline. His tailored ivory suit, unbuttoned collar revealing a thick platinum chain, and the diamond Piaget on his wrist screamed wealth. He was 38, arrogant, and utterly convinced of his invincibility.

Then there was me. Sarah Calder. Twenty-eight, a deep-sea salvage diver, and currently looking like a drowned rat. My salt-stained neoprene wetsuit was unzipped, revealing the athletic frame beneath, a frame that had just hauled a heavy, seawater-dripping titanium case up the private sea-stairs. My blonde hair clung to my neck, my knuckles were bruised, and water streamed down my face, but my sea-green eyes were fixed on Jason with a fierce, unblinking intensity. He looked me up and down, a sneer curling his lip.

“Trespassing at my private Cannes gala, Sarah? You’re bankrupt, shivering, and hunting mythical galleons.”

He swirled his champagne, the tiny bubbles mocking the storm outside and the tempest brewing within me. I remained silent, letting the water cascade down my jawline, my own storm held tightly in check. My jaw clenched. He took a step closer, his expensive suit a stark contrast to my drenched state. He gestured towards the gallery’s security, his nostrils flaring with disgust.

“Security! Throw this drenched scavenger back into the storm before she ruins my marble floors.”

As his guards moved in, my scarred hands moved with practiced calm. I flicked open the heavy dual brass latches of my salvage case. The sound echoed in the sudden hush. I hoisted the lid, and the museum spotlights caught it – a towering, seventeenth-century solid gold Spanish royal monstrance. Its encrusted halo, studded with raw emeralds, blazed, casting blinding golden light across the room. Jason’s arrogant smirk froze. His eyes widened in disbelief. His carefully constructed world was about to shatter, just like the glass he held.
