The First Strike

The air in the departure lounge was thick with the scent of expensive perfume and stale anxiety. Outside, a tempest raged, mirroring the storm brewing within. Rain lashed against the floor-to-ceiling windows, each drop a tiny hammer against the glass. The polished marble floor reflected the opulent crystal chandeliers overhead, creating a dizzying, distorted reality. Armand Dubois, all sharp angles and designer labels, loomed over Martha, a woman whose years of service were etched onto her face like a roadmap of quiet endurance. She was kneeling, a pathetic heap amidst the glittering shards of a shattered porcelain tea saucer. Her weathered hands trembled as she reached for the fragments, her simple navy dress a stark contrast to Armand’s ivory silk.

"Know your place, you worthless peasant!"

Armand's voice was a whip crack, sharp and cruel. He grabbed Martha’s arm, his manicured fingers digging into her skin. Her frail frame hunched further, her eyes welling with tears she refused to let fall. In the periphery, a new figure emerged from the shadows – Thomas Wright. Tall, imposing, his charcoal suit bespoke impeccable taste and quiet power. His steel-blue eyes surveyed the scene with a chilling, predatory calm.

"Beg on your knees!"

Armand’s hand slashed through the air, a blur of motion aimed at Martha’s face. But before it could connect, another hand, massive and corded with muscle, shot forward. Thomas’s hand clamped onto Armand’s wrist with a sickening crack. The force stopped Armand dead, her momentum halted mid-strike. A visible ripple of shock traveled up her arm, her diamond bracelets clattering like tiny bells of alarm.

"Unhand me! Do you know who I am?!"

Armand shrieked, her arrogance momentarily replaced by a yelp of pain. Thomas merely glared, his jaw set like granite. He didn't speak, but his grip tightened, wrenching Armand's arm down. With a brutal thud, her knees slammed onto the cold marble, scattering the remaining porcelain. Tears finally broke free, smearing her expensive mascara.

"The only person on her knees today is you, Dubois."

Thomas's voice was a low growl, devoid of emotion but heavy with threat. He offered Martha a hand, his touch surprisingly gentle. As she rose, he turned his freezing gaze back to Armand, now a pathetic, tear-streaked heap on the floor. Two imposing security guards appeared, their presence a silent, stark warning.

"Blacklist her from every private terminal worldwide; she walks home in the rain."

With those final, icy words, Thomas Wright made his decree. Armand, utterly defeated, could only tremble. Martha, however, felt a flicker of something she hadn't felt in years: relief. But as Thomas turned his gaze fully upon her, a strange, knowing look in his eyes, she sensed this was far from over.
