The air in the repurposed dockside tavern was thick with tension, heavy as the rusted ship chains adorning the walls. Rain lashed against the industrial skylight, each drop a percussive beat against the strained silence. Jason Vance, a man whose success was only matched by his ruthlessness, sat across from me, his bespoke suit a symbol of the world that separated us. His smirk was a predatory gleam in the dim, amber light, a stark contrast to the worn cardigan I wore. The scarred oak table bore the weight of legal briefs, an expensive fountain pen, and, incongruously, a scuffed teddy bear – Mr. Barnaby. It was our daughter’s only comfort, and now, my silent witness.

“Our daughter never slept without Mr. Barnaby, Jason. Not even the night you thought no one was watching.”

I pushed the bear forward. Its black glass eye, a hidden camera, seemed to bore into him. Jason scoffed, an amused glint in his eyes. He saw only a desperate mother, not the trap being set.
