A Mother's Desperate Plea

The derelict dockside tavern reeked of salt, decay, and unspoken sorrows. Rain hammered a relentless rhythm against the fractured industrial skylight, each drop a tiny hammer blow against the silence that had consumed Liam’s life since Toby was gone. Rusted chains, heavy with the memory of ships and distant shores, swayed from damp rafters, casting long, dancing shadows across the splintered floorboards. Liam, a woman etched by grief, stood a solitary figure in her waterlogged charcoal wool coat, the frayed scarf doing little to ward off the chill that had settled deep in her bones. Her cheeks were hollowed, her eyes red-rimmed and swollen, the silver streaks in her hair clinging to her shivering face like icy tendrils. Across from her, leaning with an air of arrogant detachment against a rough-hewn timber post, was Carter Ross. At 34, he was a billionaire, his navy cashmere overcoat immaculate, his silk tie perfectly knotted, his obsidian hair slicked back. His posture screamed entitlement, a carefully constructed facade that Liam knew, with a mother’s instinct, masked a profound, subconscious vulnerability. He tossed a thick, cream-colored envelope of cash onto a water-stained table with a callous disregard that struck Liam like a physical blow. "Take the check, Liam—my legal team already closed the ledger on your dead boy," Carter’s voice was a patronizing sneer, sharp and cruel. Liam remained silent, her mouth set in a firm line, her bloodshot eyes widening in paralyzed outrage. Tears welled, blurring the image of the man who had shattered her world. Her knuckles whitened as she clenched her fists, hidden deep within the pockets of her sodden coat, the urge to lash out battling with the crushing weight of her sorrow.
