Previously: Grace was just a struggling waitress giving free meals to a homeless man. She never expected his wealthy son to pull up in a limousine with a life-changing folder.

The Truth Behind the Fortune

Before Grace could process the sudden promotion, the heavy glass door of the diner flew open with a violent clang. Mr. Higgins, the tyrannical owner of the establishment, stormed out onto the sidewalk. His face was flushed with anger, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows.

"What is going on out here?"

Higgins bellowed, ignoring the imposing men in suits.

"Grace, you lazy girl! You’re supposed to be cleaning the grill, not flirting on the sidewalk. You're fired! Get your things and get out!"

Grace flinched, but before she could speak, the man in the wool coat stepped between her and Higgins. His towering frame completely shielded Grace from her boss’s wrath. He looked down at Higgins with utter disdain.

"I wouldn't advise speaking to my new partner that way,"

the billionaire said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, quiet register.

Higgins scoffed, trying to look brave.

"Partner? She's a nobody! And who do you think you are, coming to my restaurant and making demands?"

The man pulled a sleek business card from his pocket and held it out.

"My name is Julian Vance. And as of twenty minutes ago, this diner belongs to Vance Enterprises. I bought the building, the land, and the business. And your first official act as a former owner is to leave."

Higgins’s face drained of all color. He looked at the card, then at the bodyguards, realizing he was utterly outmatched. Without another word, he retreated inside to pack his things in disgrace.

Julian turned back to Grace, his expression turning gentle. He explained that his father, Arthur Vance, had suffered a tragic mental breakdown after losing his wife. In his grief, Arthur had vanished, choosing to live on the streets and refusing any help from his wealthy family. Julian had spent a year searching for him, only to discover that Arthur had survived the harsh winter solely because of Grace’s kindness. She had treated him with dignity when everyone else ignored him.
