Previously: A scorned billionaire thought he could crush his old high school rival, but he underestimated the power of revenge and the reach of the federal government. The tables turn dramatically.

The President's Call

The arrival of the Secret Service agents shattered the illusion of Armand Dubois’s untouchable world. His face, moments before a mask of arrogant amusement, contorted into a mask of paralyzed shock. The smugness evaporated, replaced by a ghastly pallor as his eyes darted between the imposing agents and the impassive face of Jack Mercer. The agents moved with military precision, their formation unwavering as they approached Jack. The muffled clinking of champagne flutes and the polite murmur of the gala guests faded into an almost unbearable silence, punctuated only by the distant growl of thunder and the frantic pounding of Armand’s heart.

The lead agent halted directly before Jack, his posture rigid, his salute immaculate. In his hand, he held a thick leather binder, the Great Seal of the United States embossed in gold upon its cover. The weight of the moment pressed down on Armand, a suffocating premonition of doom.

“Director Mercer, Sir! Marine One is on approach, the President requests your immediate national security brief.”

The words struck Armand like a physical blow. Director Mercer? Jack, the former outcast, the perennial victim of his bullying, was a high-ranking government official? The world tilted on its axis. Armand’s trembling fingers lost their grip on his crystal flute. It plummeted, shattering against the unforgiving marble floor in a spectacular explosion of glass shards and foaming champagne. The expensive velvet of his tuxedo slippers was instantly soaked, a pathetic, glittering mess mirroring the ruin of his composure.

Jack, however, remained a figure of unshakeable calm. He accepted the binder without a flicker of emotion, his gaze steady. He stood for a moment, a silent titan beside the visibly crumbling Armand. The storm outside intensified, the wind howling like a banshee, as if in anticipation of the reckoning to come. Jack turned his head slightly, his eyes finally meeting Armand’s, no longer filled with the pain of the past, but with a cold, sharp resolve.

“Cancel your offshore transfers tomorrow, Armand,” Jack said, his voice low and dangerously calm, cutting through the remnants of the gala's facade. “You're under federal indictment.”

Armand could only stare, his pupils dilated in terror. Cold sweat trickled down his temple as the full weight of Jack’s words, of his new reality, crashed down upon him. The distant thunder seemed to mock his downfall.
