The Gilded Cage Cracks

The autumn drizzle was a cold, persistent shroud over the city, mirroring the bleakness of the afternoon. Outside the ornate wrought-iron gates of St. Jude's elite academy, the air was thick with the scent of wet asphalt and the low hum of idling luxury engines. Gregory Thorne, all of twenty-two years and radiating an almost palpable arrogance, ran a gloved finger along the mirror-smooth finish of his obsidian sports coupe. His golden-blonde hair was impeccably slicked, his camel cashmere coat a stark contrast to the sodden uniform of Arthur, the young man tasked with its cleanliness. Arthur, lean and exhausted, his hands raw and trembling, held a damp microfiber towel, his bruised hazel eyes darting nervously. Gregory's jaw tightened as his finger met a microscopic water droplet. It was an unforgivable imperfection.

"You blind, peasant rat—did I pay you in pennies to leave filth on my paint?" Gregory sneered, his voice laced with biting venom.

Arthur flinched, a visible cloud of white vapor escaping his lips as his breath hitched. He remained silent, his chest heaving, his Adam's apple bobbing in a silent plea. The lack of a verbal response only ignited Gregory's sadistic disgust. In a sudden, violent arc, his right hand, adorned with a heavy gold family signet ring, whipped through the frigid air. The impact was a concussive, wet crack of flesh against bone, squarely on Arthur's left cheekbone. The force sent a spray of rainwater and a mist of crimson blood from Arthur's split lip. His head snapped sideways, his eyes widening in paralyzed shock as his knees slammed onto the wet concrete.

"Know your worthless place on my sidewalk!" Gregory hissed, baring his teeth.

Arthur's trembling fingers instinctively clutched his burning, bruised jawline, hot tears welling in his reddened eyes. Gregory, looming over the kneeling attendant, kicked the plastic wash bucket, sending dirty suds splashing across Arthur's soaked jeans. Just then, the heavy frosted-glass door of the brick office banged open, and David Holloway, Gregory's billionaire industrialist father and the secret owner of this franchise, marched out, his silhouette towering and broad-shouldered. His steely grey eyes, under heavy brows, fixed on Gregory with a terrifying, volcanic fury.
