The Blizzard and the Boss

The air outside St. Jude’s Cathedral was sharp enough to cut glass. Snow swirled in furious gusts, obscuring the gothic spires and clinging to the ancient gargoyles like spectral shrouds. Dusk had fallen, painting the freezing winter landscape in shades of bruised purple and deep indigo. The only light came from the flickering amber glow of wrought-iron gas lamps, casting long, dancing shadows on the slick cobblestones below. The distant, ominous rumble of the riverfront steel mills was a constant reminder of the industry that defined this town, and the man who ruled it with an iron fist.

Standing three steps up on the snow-dusted limestone, Gregory Thorne radiated menace. He was a barrel-chested brute, his face a coarse, weathered mask mottled with broken capillaries. His bristling salt-and-pepper beard was unkempt, and a sneer twisted his lips, revealing stained teeth. He was clad in a bulky, grease-stained canvas field coat, its worn shearling collar doing little against the brutal cold. His thick leather work gloves and scuffed steel-toe boots seemed to anchor him to the frozen ground.

Facing him from the lower steps was Arthur, a younger man, perhaps thirty-four. Lean, yet with a formidable athletic posture, his sharp jawline was partially obscured by grime and coal soot. His steel-gray eyes, however, were piercing, cutting through the gloom. He wore an ill-fitting, threadbare dark-blue mechanic’s jumpsuit, thin thermal sleeves shivering beneath it. He looked like just another trainee, another cog in Thorne’s industrial machine.

But Thorne didn’t see a trainee. He saw weakness. He saw an opportunity to assert his dominance. With a roar that was swallowed by the wind, Thorne shoved Arthur hard in the chest. The impact sent Arthur stumbling backward, his boot skidding on the treacherous steps. He landed on one knee in the freezing slush, his breath hitching in a cloud of white frost. Thorne’s voice, raspy and venomous, cut through the storm: “You’re worthless gutter scum, boy, and you won’t survive another night on my line!” Arthur remained silent, his jaw clenched, his eyes narrowing. Snowflakes began to cling to his eyelashes, but his gaze was fixed, a razor-sharp calculation hidden behind the icy facade.
