Previously: A quiet girl is shoved toward a cellar by a cruel director — until a billionaire couple sees the birthmark on her wrist. The truth will shatter their world and his.

In the Nursery, the Locket Opened to a Face She Had Never Seen

Three months later, Daisy was home. Her room was pink and gold, filled with soft toys and the smell of fresh paint. The leg brace was still there, but the doctors said she would grow out of it. She was healing, in body and in spirit.

Nathaniel watched her from the doorway, his heart full. She was playing with a wooden stag, running her fingers over the carved antlers, a smile on her face for the first time he'd seen.

“Daddy,” she said, looking up. “Why did the bad man want to hide me?”

He knelt beside her, taking her hand. “Because some people are sad inside, and they want others to be sad too. But you're here now, and you're safe. That's all that matters.”

She nodded, her small fingers tracing the birthmark on her wrist. “Mommy had this mark,” she said again, but this time she was smiling. “She told me it meant I was special.”

Genevieve came in, carrying a tray of cookies, her eyes still red from the tears she'd cried over her mother's betrayal. She set the tray down and sat on the floor, pulling Daisy into her lap.

“You are special,” she said. “More special than you know.”

Daisy looked at her, curious. “Did you have a mommy who was mean?”

Genevieve hesitated, then nodded. “Yes. But she's gone now, and I have you. And I will never let anyone take you away from me again.”

Daisy hugged her tight, and for a moment, the world was perfect.

Later that night, Nathaniel found the old locket in his coat pocket. He opened it, the nursery photo still inside, but now he saw it differently. The crib, the mobile, the little blanket with the stag embroidered on it — all chosen by Margaret. All part of a plan he hadn't seen.

He closed the locket and slipped it into a drawer. He would tell Daisy the truth one day, but not now. Now, she just needed to be a child.

As he turned to leave, he saw a letter on the dresser. It was addressed to him, with no return address. He opened it, his hands trembling.

It was a single page, in handwriting he recognized as Margaret's.

“I know you found her. I know what I did. I was wrong. I was so wrong. I hope you can forgive me, even though I can never forgive myself. She was always yours. I was just too blind to see it. Take care of her. She's the best part of you.”

Nathaniel read it twice, then folded it carefully and put it in his pocket. Forgiveness was a long way off, but maybe, someday, it would come.

He looked back at Daisy, asleep in her bed, her small chest rising and falling. She was safe. She was home. And in the end, that was all that mattered.

Some secrets are too heavy to carry alone, but some are worth the weight of the truth.
